Hi, can someone help with explaining what the attached means : I've got Thomas Shulver married to Lucy Cook and having several children. According to my records Lucy died in 1882 but why would it say Mary on the children baptism records ?? Lucy is listed on all the census records with Thomas until 1881.

The 2 baptisms on FindMyPast for Henry and Susanna (transcripts only) show -
Henry Shulver, bap 11 May 1845
Mother's first name - Mary?
Notes - 5y
Susanna Shulver, bap 11 May 1845
Notes - 3y/late Lucy Cook
Why the ? mark.
Have you seen the originals?
-
It does mention that she was 'Lucy Cook' on the lower one - maybe she was known generally as Mary I doubt we will ever know.
-
Wondered why it says Shulver 'late' then the next enter says Shulver 'late Lucy Cook' but the parents names are down are Thomas and Mary
-
Late before the surname usually indicates a previous marriage or the surname a person was known by after their birth surname, often if their mother had remarried and they had taken a stepfather’s surname.
-
1841 Census shows Thomas 25, Lucy 20 and Henry 2
Address Lion Inn, Bedingfield, Hoxne
-
You need to access the actual baptismal records to view the entries, it’s possible the two entries are unclear and have not been properly transcribed.

Baptism FindMyPast (transcripts only)
2 transcribed records
Lucy Cook, 19 Mar 1820, place Bedingfield, parish Bedingfield St Mary, father John Cook, labourer mother Thamar
Notes - born 16 Mar/late Burrows
The second record includes -
Mother's last name - Burrows

The Images are on Ancestry under Suffolk England birth & Bpts 1813-1924.
Entries state:-
Abt 5years 1845 May 11th Henry son of Thomas & Mary. Shulver late (no info) Abode Thordon.
Labourer.
Abt 3 years May 11th. Susanna dau. of Thomas & Mary Shulver late Lucy Cook. Abode Thordon
Labourer.
-
Looking at the originals do you think both Henry and Susannah originally showed " ... late (blank)" and the "Lucy Cook" against Susanna was added later (looks a different hand)?
-
No do not think it is a different hand, the entry is fainter than other writing however if you compare the letters i.e. Capital L, y etc., they are the same hand.
Further confirmation is from the marriage entry again the image is on Ancestry
occ, residence Father

Lucy Cook " " Spinster ----- " John Cook "
The name change appears to have taken place between 1841 and 1851 census, In 1841 her name is given as Lucy.
