I wondered if there is an explanation for John seemingly to have the surname Gafeel ??
His birth record is recorded as John Henry Rodda, and all later censuses as John Rhodda.

According to Google Translate Gafeel = Feel Good.
Some Welsh Speakers may disagree?

I see that John is only 3 and his mother Margaret is a widow. His older brothers are at least 10 years older than him so dependent upon when Margaret's husband died he might not have the same father as his older siblings and be known by his natural name.
Have you checked birth and baptism for him?

Gafeel is not a word in the welsh language and google translate is not an adequate translation tool.
Thanks

Thanks for the replies, tried the GRO for John Henry Rodda but no record.

Yet to pin down Richard Rodda (or similar) - born 1853.
ADDED

-
Many thanks Hanes teulu,on GRO I put in Rhodda with name variations but nothing came up.
Great !
-
There's a birth registration of a Richard Rodd on the GRO, Jun Qtr 1851, Merthyr Tydfil - mother's maiden name Box
Struggling to find a marriage for the Richard Rodda buried 13 Apr 1861 - on the '61 Census with a Margaret Ann, born Caerleon.
-
Whilst researching the Rhoddas I wonder if anyone can find a William John Rhodda born 28 July 1903 in the Rhonda in the 1939 Register (he is mostly recorded as just John Rhodda in later censuses and records).
His wife Lilian V Rhodda is with her parents in Penge South London in the Register .
They are both together in later Electoral Registers.
-
I note a marriage of a Lilian V Adams and a William R Rodda, Sep Qtr 1934, Bromley and a Lilian V Rodda with the Adams family in '39 in Penge UD.
Getting close?
-
Yes,getting close !
I wonder if he came to Kent to work in the Kent coalfields, but South London area ia a long way from the Kent coalfields.
-
But why William R Rodda - do you have the marriage cert?
-
I wonder if he was already in the army so isn't on the 1939 register? There's a military record for a William John Rhodda who enlisted in the Royal Tank Corps 21 July 1924 aged 20 years 359 days. He enlisted in Cardiff, was a miner and nok given as mother Mrs Rhodda 198 Ystrad Road, Pentre. Also noted Section "D" A reserve 20.7.40.
Nearly forgot, army no 7876912.
-
I don't have the marriage certificate hanes teulu, the record on line has a very blurred middle letter, but so many other records confirm it as J.
Thanks Osprey, that is indeed him in the army record, also a later army record ,application for medals ,giving his address in Penge agreeing with that on the electoral register.

Thanks osprey, that does indeed rule out the GRO record for John Henry that I obtained, there doesn't seem to be any other GRO record that fits.
Thanks also Ladyhawk ,he is the Rhodda I am interested in.I found him in the 1891 census--
33 Llamm Street,Camarthen
Jane Williams,head,widow,60,shopkeeper,with 3 boarders,and John Rhodda,boarder,22,single,collier,born Aberdare.
Now mystified, that original 1871 census entry may hold a clue ??

A suggestion for the marriage reg of Richard Rodda & Margaret. In the marriages registered Merthyr Tydfil in dec qtr 1852, there is a registration for Richard Rodda vol 11a pg 449. There should be 4 names on that reference, but there are only 3.
In the same quarter, there is a Margaret Parry vol 11a pg 469 and she is one of 5 names on that reference.
It could be that there has been a mistranscription.
Think I'd be tempted to order the one for Richard Rodda to see who he married.
