Title: Low family of Hungerford, Berkshire
Post by: rosenwalt on Monday 09 February 26 00:31 GMT (UK)
My Jane Low had several children. The first was Elizabeth. I have a record of sorts saying that Jane got the Constable after a William Salt of Speen as the father. They were also to maybe find him in Wiltshire. This was 1757. She then had 7 other children, also all baseborn/illegitimate. All were baptized in Hungerford. I don't know if William Salt fathered all of them also. Was wondering if there are records that have these children with maybe a notation in the column, nothing the proposed father. Guess it's my last hope. I've found nothing more in any bastardy records that are online. (I'm in the USA.) Thanks much.

Hi,

The Berks Family History Society has produced  an edition of the Berkshire Overeseer's Papers upto 1834.

In these Papers there is this (part only) entry;
24-10-1757 Warrant to Wiltshire Constables to apprehend William Salt of Speen as the reputed father of a female bastard child Elizabeth born 13-9-1757 to Jane Low of Hungerford.

If you were to contact them they may be able to offer more info.

I'm not asscociated with them only a customer of their sources.

Alan

Yes, that is the record I have. I paid for the information. They didn't have any more of the children. Guess he supported Jane so she didn't have to go after him for money. Thanks much for responding.
