I am looking for a marriage John Edward Martin b in Charles Passage, Tipton son of William and Ann in 1872, to Ellen formally Goodman (taken from sons bc). I suspect she is Ellen Rebecca Goodman born in Dudley in 1872. In 1882 she is living with a father Benjamin and 2 of her siblings. I guess I need the marriage to move on with this. In 1891 she is living with a sister Zipporah. By 1901 she is living with John Edward as his wife and Benjamin is down as father in law. Any help on this would be much appreciated x

When was the son born?

There's a John Edward Martin marriage in Walsall 1893 but not to Ellen Goodman
-
My Grandad was b in Dudley in 1907 but Joseph the eldest was about 1893/4 x

Have you checked GRO online to confirm that Joseph's birth shows mmn as Goodman
-
Joseph Martin mmn Goodman - Dudley, September quarter 1893

There's a John Edward Martin marriage in Walsall 1893 but not to Ellen Goodman
Accounted for later (it’s the Alice Peake marriage) so not him.
There is also 1892 marriage in a Wolverhampton
Poss spouses Mary Jane Chater, Annie Cole
Have you got either of Zipporah’s marriage certs?
-
Thank you all. Yes I have a few of the siblings bc who I knew but Joseph died in the war 1915 we knew about him through my Grandad stories x
-
I have not got marriage certs for Zipporah but have found marriage for Obadiah (Job) Haddlington and Edward Perkes. Benjamin's mother was also Zipporah x
-
There was another John (Edward) b in 1872 Tipton I had thought this was him to begin with x
-
The 1892 Wolverhampton marriage is the Chater one, also accounted for later.
Certainly the fact that Benjamin moves across households is fortunate!
But one wonders what the reason for not getting married was. (Usually a previous marriage where spouse is still alive, hence why looking at those other marriages)

One thing that occurred to me was that Ellen was married to someone else and when she married John her new surname would be written but she would still give children her maiden name x

If I am following the right William and Ann Martin, they are living in Cross Street, Tipton in censuses. Is that the right family?
In 1881 2876/32/38 - 45A Cross Street
William and Ann with children, Benjamin, Ann M and John E, 9 yrs.
This is the puzzle - 1891 2293 /143
48A, Cross Street
William and Ann
Charles J , son 19 yrs
Charles Wakelam? Son in law
Ann M - daughter.
Is Charles J,an error for son John E?
-
Thank you Heywood, I have not found them on 1891. Yes Charles Wakelam was their son in law married to daughter Ann. They did not have a Charles so possibly John. I found a Joseph b 1869 to William and Ann this is confusing as their Eldest son William also married an Ann so Joseph may be theirs. You can see how I got led down the wrong path on this before x
