Title: Pearsalls
Post by: rebeccareardon on Wednesday 04 February 26 23:42 GMT (UK)
Hi all
I am descended from Joseph Pearsall (1792-1836) and Ann Guttery (1792-1880) - child Mary (1812-1880 married to Richard Tomkinson (1809-1879) who were all around Brierley Hill.
Wondering if anyone knows Josephs siblings, parents and origins but also any general information. I am having trouble verifying if what I have is correct.

The marriage was at Handsworth in 1811.

Both bride and groom were recorded as of this parish.

What were the names and order of birth of all their children?
Having a look at the names given to their children can be useful in looking at earlier family names.

Thanks All
Joseph and Ann Pearsalls children were - 7 children – Mary (b1812), William (1815-1880), Joseph (1819-1846), John (b1822), Ann (b1826), Elizabeth (b1830) and Eliza (b1832)

Josephs parent were William Pearsall (c1770-1809) and Ann (c1769-1850) and are buried at st Michaels churchyard at Brierley Hill.

Wondering if William Pearsall c1880 had any other children?
Also where Joseph and Ann might be buried?

If you don't already have it.

Joseph Pearsall - Boiler Maker (1792-1836) left a will you can find it on ancestry.
He names his wife Ann his 3 sons William, Joseph and John and his 4 daughters Mary wife of Richard Tomkinson - Publican, Ann, Elizabeth and Eliza.

There is no will. It is an administration of the estate only, can be seen on FindMyPast

Thank you for everyone's help. It has helped me get it all together - I have few things to look up.

I have another theory I want to run by anyone who can help

1822-1845 Mrs Ann Pearsall was licensee of the Horseshoe Pub on corner of High and Moor (now demolished) in Brierley Hill as per Hitchmoughs Black Country Pubs Brierley Hill
1841 census Ann is living in Chapel st a couple of km away with 2 young daughters and her daughter in law.
1849 Pearsall and Son had the Horseshoe pub licence- also says they owned the pub
1851-1854 James Pearsall had the Horseshoe pub licence (I hesitate here as she does not have a son called James - there was a Johns born to a William which was one of Annes son, so maybe James is her grandson? )
1858-1868 Ann Pearsall was licensee of Old BEll Inn

QUestion: is this my ann Pearsall?????
the reason I am thinking all this is that Ann's daughter Mary married Richard Tomkinson and other pub records show

1834-1835 Richard Tomkinson was licensee  Old New Inn in Brierley Hill (and listed before him was Thomas which was the name of his father)
1854-1861 Richard Tomkinson was the licensee of the Bell on Bell Lane -
1861 Census shows that Richard and Mary's family were living at Bell - of this I am sure as the children's names all align
1856-1857 Mary Tomkinson was licencee of Old Bell Inn

Question: Is the BEll and Old Bell the same pub?

There is some confusion between the 2 different Ann Pearsalls – different generations.

Ann (nee Pearson) widow of William Pearshall
in 1841 census at Brierly Hill, with 2 sons

Ann Pearsall 70 Publican  (she died in 1850)
William Pearsall 40 Boiler maker
James Pearsall 25 Boiler maker

The other Ann Pearsall was the widow of Joseph.
Both Anns were involved with running a public house, both are “your” Anns, but they are different generations.

Some of the records in your reply #14, refer to the older Ann Pearsall (who had a son named James),  and some of it refers to the younger Ann. They do not all relate to the same Ann.

Thank you for all your work -  I am still trying to work out if the Ann Pearsall #1(married to William with son James and that died in 1850) is related to my Ann Pearsall #2 (married to Joseph and died in 1880). But I can't find anything to suggest that other than same name and both in Brierley Hill?
can't find out my Ann #2 is involved in pubs anywhere other than through her daughter Mary and her other daughter Ann (b1826)?

So I think

1822-1845#1 Ann licensee of the Horseshoe Pub
1841 #2 Ann living at Chapel St
1849 #1 Ann - Pearsall and Son licensee of Horseshow pub
1851-1854 #1 Ann's sone James Pearsall licensee of Horseshoe pub licence
1858-1868 #3 Anne  was licensee of Old Bell Inn (daughter of #2 Anne and sister of Mary Tomkinson who was owner)

You need to go back and read the information that has been posted for you earlier in this thread.

Ann Pearsall #1 (widow of William ) was the mother of Joseph and therefore mother-in-law to Ann Pearsall #2.
