Title: Rupert Arthur Swindells
Post by: Luzzu on Wednesday 04 February 26 14:22 GMT (UK)
I am looking at Jacob Winter [1865-1935] who was a watchmaker and jeweller on Lower Hillgate, Stockport, Cheshire. He was born in London and died in Stockport. He didn’t marry. He was buried in the Jewish Cemetery at Crumpsall, Manchester. I have found him on all the censuses 1871-1921 with the exception of 1911.

There is reference to a son on an Ancestry tree. The name of his son was Rupert Arthur Swindells [1891-1980]. He was born in Alderley Edge, Cheshire on 31st August 1891 [ref 1939 Register] and he was a dentist.

Jacob Winter also had a jewellery business in Alderley Edge during the 1890’s until around 1902.

I am trying to link Rupert Arthur Swindells to Jacob Winter but I can’t find a birth or marriage reference for him. Rupert married Elsie McCaffery prior to 1921.

I am also struggling to find Rupert and Elsie on any census prior to the 1921 census by which time they were married. Elsie McCaffery was born 23rd March 1896 in Fleetwood, Lancashire.

The only document on which I can link Jacob Winter to Rupert Arthur Swindells is a military record on Fold 3 [I don’t have the full document yet]. Rupert was doing his WW1 service in 1917 with the RAF and gave Jacob Winter as his next-of-kin but the relationship as “uncle”. I can’t link him to any of Jacob’s siblings.

Can anyone help please?

1901 Rupert Johnson is a boarder with John & Margaret Swindells in Alderley Edge. Perhaps they informally adopted him?

Thanks so much for all your replies. :) Plenty to follow up here. Not sure I will get any proof he was Jacob Winter's son, if indeed he was. The connection is there though with the military record and Rupert was a mourner at Jacob's funeral although there was nothing in the will for him [if he was a secret though he was possibly "looked after" privately before Jacob's death].

Appreciate everyone taking the time to help.
