I thought I had cancelled my Ancestry yearly subscription on Monday, however today I received a message from PayPal saying the money had been taken from my account. It looks like I made a mistake and didn't go through the whole process. Also I didn't realise I could have changed the settings to stop automatic renewal. I am going to phone them later to see if I can get a refund, I'm not very hopeful, I would appreciate any advice about this 😊

A friend of mine had a similar experience a year or so ago. She rang, said she thought it had been cancelled and as there was no advance notice of the payment being taken she was unaware that the cancellation had not gone through.
The refund was actioned.
fingers crossed that you get the money back

I have cancelled in the past and received a refund.

Thank you Tickettyboo and bikermickau, and that is reassuring. I'll check out the terms and conditions link and give them a phone later :)

It is not a straightforward process, you think you have done it but no, one has to scroll down and make yet another click.
TIP
If one does not receive a confirmation eMail that the subscription renewal has been cancelled, you have not stopped Auto-Renewal.
Voice of experience here, but I did get a refund of the full price subscription after talking to one of their reps.
Now the day after I renew I turn off Auto-Renewal, I have a Diary Reminder a couple of days before the subscription ends and check that they have not changed any setting.
Renewed the next day at £89.99 worldwide thanks to the link posted on the forum.
Good luck.

Thank you so much Biggles50, glad I'm not the only one :) I did have a note in my dairy but as you say it's not straightforward and I mucked it up. It's so wrong that it doesn't just cancel when you press cancel and that the auto renew is on by default rather than off.

This has happened to many people but hopefully you will be refunded and can then take advantage of a cheaper option soon as you see your refund. ;)
The links are here as a reminder to everyone that this offer is still available. :)

I've said this so often to so many people both online and face to face. The companies ask you all sorts of questions often with dubious possibilities, about whether you really want to cancel. Until you go all the way through and reach a screen that confirms that you have cancelled and received an email confirming that, there is a good chance that you haven't cancelled.

Thank you everyone for your help. After phoning Ancestry I've got a refund, and the email confiming it :) :)

You're so right Zaph., I think I had a senior moment and lost concentration ::) :) I will make sure the auto renew is off if I decide to rejoin inthe future :)
