Title: I've always been curious, what percentage of Welsh am I?
Post by: MrsCurxed13 on Thursday 15 January 26 01:28 GMT (UK)
I'm confused guys!

My great grandparents are from Swansea (Abertawe), but my grandfather was born in England but half Welsh through his parents,

My mam (His daughter) is the youngest of 4 siblings, not quite sure what percentage she is as my grandmothers  fully English according to Ancestry.com.

My mam had my brother in 1987 and I arrived 9 years later in 1996.

I've always felt passionate about my heritage as my mam says I'm apparently ⅛ Welsh.

(For context, my brother and I have different dads whom are brothers, confusing I know, don't get me started 😂)  Both my dad's parents are English as are my brothers parents (Same mam) but what I want to know is what's my legitimate percentage of Welsh? I'm not good with maths but it should end this ongoing debate with my brother

Thanks :)

Your post is a bit confusing as you don't explain where all of your ancestors at great grandparent level are from. Plus you said your grandfather was born in England but half Welsh through his parents who were from Swansea.

If you use my example below then you would be 25% Welsh if both grandparents are Welsh but only 12.5% if only one of them was Welsh.

If someone is born in country 'A' but lives in country 'B' from 6 months old until 12 years, then in 'C' for the next 8 years, where should he say he is from?   And what if both parents had equally peripatetic lives?  And what if all 4 grandparents were from 'D'?

My Mother was born in Canada, both her parents were born in England.

My Father was born in England.

His Father was born in England to a Couple who were both born in Ireland.

Whilst his Mother was also born in England to a couple who were both born in Italy.

That makes me confused.

Yes, you've summed it up perfectly. Why don't people manage to understand this concept? Supposing somebody's 16 great great grandparents were all born in the same country but all emigrated. Where does that leave you?

Then you get the people who want to deny one or two of their ancestors when it comes to evaluating their ethnicity.
