Post by: ibbotson on Wednesday 14 January 26 11:29 GMT (UK)
Under Belgium marriage certificates regulations…..when a widow re-marries will the certificate/ details show her previous marriage surname of her maiden name ?

Not sure but our neighbour in Belgium was twice married ,she had a sort of double barrel name , her present husband’s and another, but if that was her first marriage surname or her maiden name—-?
Married women all keep their maiden name which comes after their married
surname but in a remarriage-?

Hello,

https://www.mariage.be/conseils-mariage/formalites/changer-de-nom-apres-le-mariage.asp

To make it short : in  Belgium everybody must use the surname written on his/her birth certificate (acte de naissance ) for all official circumstances ( including Banking account , passport ,plane tickets ...) and if the name of the husband  or wife is used in private life the surname at birth must be mentionned on your letter box .

So, for sure her maiden name will be mentionned  then it may be said : veuve X.

Thank you for the info. So I’m assuming then if I’m searching for her second marriage record I would do it under her maiden name? Regards

That's right. As a Belgian I've always found it strange (even unfair) that in some countries the woman takes her husband's name from the moment she's married. That's not the way it should be, in my humble opinion...

I agree, it sort of diminishes a woman ,makes her almost an “appendage “of her husband when she loses her maiden name .
Perhaps it is from “ The Code Napoleon” ,can’t remember exactly but an odd rule re twins ,the first born not considered the eldest —- can you clarify that anyone please?
Sorry if that is “ off topic”.
Viktoria.
