Hi
Hoping the Rootchaters can help.
I'm looking for a John Sellwood house painter born in Salisbury 1828-1832 .He marries 17th June 1880 at St barts Wednesbury Staffordshire to a Ann Williams widow.
He is also a widower with a father Benjamin Sellwood warehouseman.
They have a daughter Agnes on the 9th August 1880 .
He stays in Wednesbury until the 1891 census.
I can't find him before his marriage or after 1891.
Any help appreciated.

There is also an 1881 census for this family, showing baby Agnes as 0, so just a few months old, but his new wife had four children who are all listed-Arthur 17, Mary Ann 14, Emma 11 and Thomas 9, all with the surname of Williams.
Regards.

If there was a son John to match your John with the dates you have given he would have been born before the marriage of Benjamin & Jane. I assume Milliepede was just suggesting William Henry as a possible sibling as he had a father Benjamin.

Yes
I tried John Sellwood and John Hearne but nothing.
Thanks though for all the effort.

after 1891
John is on the Wednesbury electoral registers at 8 Dangerfield Lane until the mid 1890's (as Selwood)
In the 1896-1898 registers he appears as John Sellwood at 50 Foundry Street. Parish of Darlaston.
(1896 names his previous address)
1899, gone.
So he may have been around when Ann died in 1897
Her burial at Moxley, 13 April 1897.
Age 52

He marries 17th June 1880 at St barts Wednesbury Staffordshire to a Ann Williams widow.
He does.
As he was a widower, there ought to be an earlier marriage for him somewhere!
Interestingly, banns had been called for them the previous year, in June/July 1879, at Moxley. But the marriage didn't happen.
Very sadly, Ann's son Arthur Williams committed suicide in 1883, age 17.
Free article on findmypast in the Worcester Journal, 2 June 1883
Mentions his stepfather. In column 6.

Hi
Yes it is
Brilliant find with the suicide.
That's something I'd never have thought of.
Found the witnesses to the marriage John Sellwood and Ann Williams are Abel and Annie Malborn.
So a lead there.
Daughter Agnes witnesses at her marriage 1899 are her brother Thomas Williams and future mother in law Sarah Ann Taylor.
Not looking forward to a slog through 100 John Sellwood marriages which is the avenue to pursue.
Thanks everyone especially Jonwarn for the suicide article.

Have you got the father’s details now from Agnes’ marriage?
-
Yes
Her father is down as John Williams house painter.
However her step father was Samuel Williams a coach smith 1837- June 1877
And it is John Sellwood who is a house painter.
I've dug a bit deeper through John Sellwood marriages from 1844-1862 for the first wife.
There is a John Sellwood ag lab born 1831 Tilegurst Berks
Marries firstly Pheobe Fuller June 1852 Bradfield Oxfordshire ,Berks .Pheobe dies Sep 1855 and
John remarries Mary Ann Oliver at Reading Mar 1859
Neither marriage seems to be available on line to find his father's details are Benjamin Sellwood.
1871 census Tilehurst Berks
John Sellwood 42 ag lab Theale
Mary 45 worker paper mill Kelston?
Elizabeth 17 Tilehurst
William 13 Theale
George 7 Theale.
Not spotting family together after that bur really picking at straws.

Baptism 17 Jan 1830 for that one with father Thomas Selwood mother Sarah
With parents in 1841/1851 so no Benjamin there I’m afraid

Even if John can't be found before the marriage to Ann, there ought to be a death record for him.
Her father is down as John Williams house painter.
However her step father was Samuel Williams a coach smith 1837- June 1877
And it is John Sellwood who is a house painter.
Cidey, I don't understand this. John Sellwood was Agnes's father.
Samuel Williams died three years before she was born.
