Good evening all
I found the attached photo at my mother's house, and she thinks it may be her paternal grandad, who she only met once. He worked for the railway however, and the bricklayers in the family are on my dad's side.
I wondered in anyone could tell me whether anyone can recognise the buildings in the background as being in Chesterfield or New Whittington which would probably conclusively identify him as her grandad.

Some time between 1940 and 1965 I think judging by his age in the pic 🙂

What was his address on the 1939 register?

What was his name & when did he die?
What was his address on his death cert? This can then be compared with his address on the 1939 register
"between 1940- 1965" is a long time. He could have moved house. There is nothing of particular significance in the photo to identify anything about the area

Looks like 98 higher Albert street in 1939. It also says in 1939 that he was a permanent way labourer, which differs from what we know of 1911. No trace of him or any of his family in 1921. His name was Alfred Needham and he died on 17 august 1964. I'll have to root around in mom's boxes for the actual death certificate.
I know it's a long shot but I wondered if someone familiar with chesterfield would recognise the buildings in the background.

In 1921 they are incorrectly transcribed as Northam - error notified to Ancestry.
Living at 23 Higher Albert St. Alfred was b 1888

With bricklayers on your fathers side have you discounted all of them. He is dressed to look as though he is building that wall rather than a posed picture against someone else's work

I've dug out the death certificate and the address is still 23 higher Albert Street, so that may be his garden. The death certificate also confirms him as a railway platelayer though.
With respect to the bricklayers on my dad's side, one was born in amblecote, Staffordshire in 1875 so I'm thinking he would be a bit old, one died in 1901 and another emigrated to the US in 1901. I'm therefore inclined to think it is Alfred Needham, just wanted a location check.

If you look at Google Maps it doesn't look like Higher Albert Street, although I am not sure if 23 is still there or the garages have been built where it stood. Admittedly the street is on a hill and the picture looks as though it could be on a hill.

There is no large scale OS map revision between 1914 and 1962.

Put these two in a split screen. On the 1914 map there is a substantial building with a glass roof behind Higher Albert Street, between nos 11 & 13 (house numbers from the later map). By 1962 there is a factory on that site. In 1914 there was also a building nearer the road which could be the one in the left background.
When was the factory built? Was he working just down the road from his house?
