This portrait that I recently found in my late gran's papers seems to show a lover of my great-grandmother (1878-1956 b Lancashire; lived Yorkshire (briefly), Cheshire and North Wales). It follows that he may be my gran's father, a mystery that has long eluded us.
The photographer's indented mark on the lower right corner (John W. French, I think) suggests the photo may have been taken around 1900 in Sunderland. Based on the sitter's appearance, can anyone date the photo more precisely?
Lastly, any guesses as to the sitter's name, assuming he also wrote the message on the back of the photo? "Cressie", I think?

Later than 1900 I'm afraid.
I would suggest 1930's - possibly 1940's.
