Title: 1841 Census Look-Up (FindMyPast) - Sutherland
Post by: Pendlewitch67 on Wednesday 31 December 25 17:10 GMT (UK)
Good evening

I was hoping for a couple of 1841 census' look-up, please, in the search for my McKay/MacKay ancestors.

047/12/3 (SP REF)

Mackay  Alexander  36 Dornoch, Mackay  Mary  44
Mackay William 9

050/8/1 (SP REF)

McKay Alexander 30 Farr
McKay Mary 32
McKay William 10

I know the 1841 census offers little information but any clue may be helpful. I am seeking the places of birth  if it is recorded plus siblings.

Thank you.

Amanda

I am a little confused as to your reference to FindMyPast  :-\.  Scotlands People is the only site with the original copies of Scottish census

Hi

Apologies, the references quoted are from SP but the census returns look to be available on FindMyPast.

Thanks

The transcripts are available on FindMyPast and Ancestry.  :)

Those references are not making any sense to me, I cannot see them on the FindMyPast transcripts

Hi

Thank you. Just rechecked and, unfortunately, FREECEN doesn't cover Dornoch and Farr in 1841 :(

Good evening

I was hoping for a couple of 1841 census' look-up, please, in the search for my McKay/MacKay ancestors.

047/12/3 (SP REF)

Mackay  Alexander  36 Dornoch, Mackay  Mary  44
Mackay William 9

I have just looked at SP and there are over 20 Mackays listed with that reference at Dornoch.  Looking at transcripts for 1841 it would appear that the people you have mentioned at Dornoch are 2 different households though they have the same address -Proncy, Dornoch .

Alexander age 36 is living with Bessy age 76 -

Mary age 44 is with Thomas 44, William 9 and John 6

Hi

Thank you for the look-up. I had an idea that there were more than two families. I did not have Thomas and Bessie in my list of occupants though and as Thomas is with Mary and William that has pretty much answered my query. I was looking for Alexander, Mary and William as a family.

Thank you  ;D

Hello
The ScotlandsPeople references to the 1841 census each refer to 2 pages in a census book which contain up to 50 people.
The Farr reference 050/8/1 has 38 Mackay / McKays and the Dornoch reference 047/12/3 has 26 Mackay / McKays.
The family group of Alexander, Mary and William appears on none of the pages.
The Farr references are all living in Midtown, Farr. The Dornoch ones are in Proncy.
As far as I can tell, FindMyPast 1841 census for Sutherland has no references given, only a 'Schedule' which doesn't exist on the original.
Ancestry does give references, but they differ from the ScP ones in that Ancestry refers to the exact page, and ScP only refers to the odd (left-hand) ones (which each cover the odd one and the right-hand even page). So the William reference in Farr is 50/8/1 on ScP but 50/8/2 on Ancestry.
Good luck in your search for Mackays in Sutherland!
Bill

Hi Bill

Thank you for the info. At this point I am getting further along being able to rule people out rather than actually finding them.

I suspect my McKay/Mackay ancestors' elusiveness could mean a bigger story.

Thank you  ;D
