I have the 1860s/90s Royal Navy record of an ancestor. On it there is the occasional abbreviation QDD usually in the column after the ship name entry.
Also written in at the end in large letters it say "D.D 17 February 1895 (Congestion of the Lungs)" I'm guessing the Latter may refer to Date of death, but i'd be grateful if this could be confirmed and also what QDD means.
Regards

Can’t help with QDD but D.D is discharged Dead and you are correct that is the date.

According to AI Overview:
In the Royal Navy, QDD is an abbreviation that stands for Qualified in Deep Diving.
This title was historically applied to qualified Commissioned Boatswains who were specialists in diving.

Thank you for the quick responces.
He was certainly a commissioned boatswain.
Apparently he was also Court marshalled a couple of times for drunkenness & alcoholism. I wonder id this general lack of care for himself that aggravated the condition that killed him at the age of only 46.
Regards & thanks again
