Title: Alfred Bowd Military Records
Post by: JakeMcGhee on Tuesday 30 December 25 17:49 GMT (UK)
Good Evening all,

I was hoping to find some information on a distant Uncle named Alfred Bowd, he was the Brother of my Great x4 Grandfather George Bowd, I saw that in the 1881 Census he was listed as a Bombardier Soldier in The Royal Artillery, which interested me, he was born in Swavesey, Cambridgeshire, in the District of St Ives in 1851, to parents Thomas & Ruth Bowd/Mitham, I was hoping someone would be able to help me find any information of his military service, or point me towards the best places to search.

Kind regards,
Jake

This is a helpful starting point. Note section 10 for the artillery.

There is an entry on an embarkation list for India dated 1871 (British Library reference is: IOR-L-MIL-15-42) for Gunner Alfr Bowd born 1849 with the number 2446, who enlisted 2 Feb 1868. He was serving with the 8th Brigade Royal Artillery. The year of birth may be inaccurate, given to make himself appear older when he enlisted. The 1881 Census entry for your Alfred suggests that his year of birth was 1850/51
