Title: Magee/Freeman?
Post by: ashtayl04 on Tuesday 30 December 25 09:06 GMT (UK)
Hello Everyone, was hoping someone with higher expertise might be able to de-bunk this mystery,

So i have an Edward Freeman, Butcher born Roughly 1776 and Died Mar 1845 in Hawkell Marrying an Amelia Matilda Magee (Widow) in Rochford, Essex on the 29th June 1816 witnessed by James Liverman & i can’t transcribe the second witness,

I would like to know what Amelia Matilda’s Maiden name was, it said that she was a member of that parish where it says widow, To me Magee sounds like an Irish Surname? 🤔 can’t be too sure however

Thanks!

I’ve just noticed what you mean, with Edward dying in his 30s and Matilda Dying in her 60s surely something isn’t right 🤔 the death registration i have for Amelia Matilda doesn’t note a family member registering it either 🤔

Note that Amelia Matilda’s Death Reg also says wife of edward freeman, not widow, so edward must have died later?

They’re is a Daughter of Amelia Matilda
Matilda Freeman Est Birth 1812 and She Died 1852 in Pitsea

She was Married to George Shead in 23/07/1842 in Hawkwell, she doesn’t appear on that 1841 census with Edward and Amelia Matilda but having said Edward and Amelia Matilda married 20/06/1816 this would make this Matilda Illigitimate? Or the possible daughter of this Magee bloke with Amelia Matilda’s Maiden Name?

The transcript is on FindMyPast, both were single.

Is it only the death record for Amelia Matilda Freeman that mentions the name Amelia, if not where else is it mentioned

What are your thoughts on the above theory regarding Amelia Matilda’s Daughter Matilda, born before her marriage to edward freeman?

It looks as though that Matilda Freeman was possibly baptised late on 16 Jul 1837 at Hockley - parents Edward Freeman occ Butcher and mother Matilda.

The 1851 for Matilda Shead bn c1814 has a son Edward Freeman bn c1839
