Hello,
Walter Thomas Smith and his wife Caroline Langbridge married in Wandsworth in 1888. They had 10 Children in the Birth District of Wandsworth. Two of the their children had mothers maiden name as DOWSETT. Elizabeth Rhoda born 1890 and Frederick Edwin born 1896. I have found out that the family of Caroline Langbridge went by the name Dowsett in Census records.
George Langbridge/Dowsett born about 1837 in Stepney and his wife Elizabeth Rhoda born 1838 Bristol lived in Battersea in 1881, 1891 and 1901. Caroline Langbridge is listed as Dowsett in the 1881 Census in Battersea. The Family is always listed as DOWSETT.
Can someone help me to solve this mystery ? I always thought the surname is Langbridge :-[

Was George Langbridge born illegitimate? He may have been born Dowsett & his mother married Langbridge or vice versa

Hello,

Caroline's birth registered as Langbridge
LANGBRIDGE, CAROLINE BURCHALL
GRO Reference: 1867 M Quarter in CAMBERWELL Volume 01D Page 667
Have you got all her siblings birth details?
I ask because George's occupation, if I am not being led astray by the algorithn, seems to vary greatly.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason for the two names!
in 1883 Caroline's brother Joseph Henry LANGRIDGE married.
Address Havelock Terrace
Father George LANGRIDGE, Engine Driver
Caroline LANGRIDGE is a witness.
I cannot, though, find a birth for the 14 yr old Robt Dowsett with George, Elizabeth and sister Kate in 1891. Born Stratford, Essex abt 1877. Either as DOWSETT or LANGRIDGE. And if he is 14, where is he in 1881?

Joseph Dowsett 30 labr. born in county
Elizabeth 25 born in county
But no Edward or George with them.
Both Edward and George were baptised on the same day 25 Aug 1839 in Stepney
With the surname Langbridge
Parents Joseph (labourer) and Ellizabeth Langbridge
1841 census – the parents are now Dowsett. But the children? – I cannot find them. >:(
Joseph Dowsett 30 and Elizabeth Dowsett 25 in Stepney
-
also - in 1841 should be this child. I don't think there is another LANGBRIDGE/NORTH couple around.
LANGBRIDGE, JAMES TRICE NORTH
GRO Reference: 1841 M Quarter in STEPNEY Volume 02 Page 470
(although I cannot see him later at all, unless he is the marriage to Amelia Blanche Browne in 1873
occupation Fellowship Porter. Father Joseph LANGBRIDGE corn porter.) with Joseph and Elizabeth as DOWSETT in 1851

George Langbridge / Dowsett born 1838/39 was the son of Joseph Langbridge / Dowsett.
I think you may need to go further back with this family, and delve much deeper, to work out what is going on with the name. I have only skimmed the surface.
Joseph LANGBRIDGE married Elizabeth NORTH in 1833 Hackney, but uses the name Dowsett in census records, although birth records for children are under Langbridge.
Joseph Langbridge was bapt 4 Jun 1809 Saint George in the East.
Parents - William Langbridge (revenue officer/ customs officer) and Martha. Chapman Street
There was also Jane born 1805, and William born 1806, James 1813
James Langbridge baptised 12 Sep. 1813 Saint George in the East.
He married Sarah Cronmire in 1835. From 1841 census and onwards he is also using the surname Dowsett, although his children’s births are mostly recorded as Langbridge.
Then there are some strange marriage records ---
Batchelor William Langbridge married (Banns) widow Martha Tattam - August 1803 Islington
Widower William Langbridge married (Banns) widow Martha Tattam - Dec 1809 Whitechapel
Martha Langbridge left a WILL – 1853 Clifton, Gloucestershire (could be worth reading)
-
Martha who died 1853 was the wife of Richard Langbridge who died 1820
He was late of the George Inn, Cheltenham
He left a will too. 3 sons. (Who were not Martha’s)

Noted. thanks. I didn’t look at the will. Eyes suffering too much tonight. :)
-
I think Martha Tattam was nee Potterton.
So the Dowsett doesn’t come form her either!
But cannot find a death for either William or Martha
-
Incredible work in such a short time, thank you guys. I thought of an illegitimate birth too, but it seems that’s not the case.
Maybe it’s a generational Surname from an ancestor but that would not explain why the family used Langbridge in Birth, marriage and death records and used Dowsett ,,in private” and for Census records.
-
Could centenarian Martha be the answer? :)
Name: Age at Death (in years):
DOWSETT, MARTHA 100
GRO Reference: 1840 J Quarter in STEPNEY Volume 02 Page 282

Not if she had a child in 1813.
-
Yes, I was thinking about an inheritance hence the change of name.
-
Thank you all for helping me. The Father of Joseph Langbridge born 1809 was William Langbridge who married widow Martha Tatum nee Potterton. Maybe Williams mother was a Dowsett? But i have still no idea why the Langbridge family would use the surname Dowsett after 2 Generations

Maybe try to contact rootschatter hlbradd whose husband belongs to the LANGBRIDGE/DOWSETT family, althought it's been a while since she was online.
