Title: Ann Best Hornsby - born Walbottle (Newburn) 1853
Post by: mazzie74 on Friday 26 December 25 18:48 GMT (UK)
Hi

Ann Best Hornsby was born in Walbottle 8th June 1853 according to her birth certificate;
(census says Newburn but they are very close so nothing out the ordinary).

She was the daughter of Joseph Hornsby and Hannah Best.

She had an illegitimate daughter born 11th March 1871 in Billy Pit, Longbenton called Mary Ann Turnbull Hornsby.

1861 Census:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7J3-YLS?lang=en

1871 Census:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V51V-XPZ?lang=en

She disappears after the 1871 census, but her daughter is living with the widowed grandmother (listed as her mother in the 1881 Census and grandmother in the 1891 Census).

1881 Census:

1891 Census:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:HS1J-16Z?lang=en

Her daughter married Joshua Midwood in 1893.

I can't find Ann Best Hornsby after 1871.

There are 2 possible marriages in Tynemouth district 1876 and 1877 but I can't find an Ann that fits with a birth Newburn or Walbottle on any further census with any surname.

Can anybody please help to find Ann Best Hornsby after 1871.

Thanks

Darin.

Hi Darin,

I wonder, there is a birth in Q1 1879 in Tynemouth for an Oliver Mitchell Mitchell. If you check the GRO website his mother's maiden name is Hornsby. This would appear to confirm that your Ann Hornsby married Joseph Mitchell in 1876.

I can't find them in 1881 (Oliver died in 1880 aged 1) but this seems like a strong possibility? Perhaps they moved away after this?

Thanks,

Lewis

I have found the burial entry for baby Oliver Mitchell mentioned by Lewis.  He was buried at St Alban, Earsdon.
I have added the info from the burial entry to Find a Grave.

You are welcome.  I know you know who her husband was I just didn't know if you already knew which Church they were married at.
Happy New Year.

On Freebmd there is an Ann Mitchell who died registered in the Newcastle district Sept quarter 1888.  She was age 35 which would tie in with an 1853 birth.  Perhaps this one may be worth looking at further?   She may have died in hospital there perhaps?
