Title: Watson/Stephenson Family Thoughts
Post by: Lensmeister on Thursday 18 December 25 15:36 GMT (UK)
Afternoon everyone,

I'm hoping people could have a think and give me opinions on my thoughts and research.

Anything I have a FACT on I will put [F] next to if it clarifies.

[F] John Watson born 6-Aug-1780 in Whitby, North Yorkshire the son of William and Jane Watson and christened 17-Dec-1780.

I have searched for William Watson marrying a Jane in the Whitby Parish registers - Nothing found.

Doing a broader search on Ancestry I discovered:

William Watson marrying Jane Stephenson in Loftus, North Yorkshire 15-Feb-1777.
Loftus is about 13/14 miles from Whitby and is close to the coast.
Also in the area ON the coast is Skinngingrove, Staithes and Boulby.
Between Loftus and Staithes is Easington.

So this does seem a highly likely set of parents for John Watson.

Thoughts

Then the Rabbit hole beckoned.

I obtained a copy of the PR
Loftus, St Leonard, North Riding of Yorkshire Baptisms 1730-1779

In it I have found baptisms for:
Jane Stephenson - 11-Apr-1758
William Watson - 17-May-1759.

These could be the baptisms of the couple.

Thoughts?

William and Jane Watson had a daughter Elizabeth baptised at Loftus 25 May 1780,

[F] John Watson born 6-Aug-1780 in Whitby, North Yorkshire the son of William and Jane Watson and christened 17-Dec-1780.

On this baptism Sailor is mentioned, presumably the occupation of William

William i do think was a sailor.

John was also a sailor. In fact I suspect he was lost at sea.

John married a Rebecca Brown and her father was a sailor.

There does not appear to be an occupation listed for the father on the Loftus baptisms

I noticed that.

Loftus is a bit inland (mind you Gt. Ayton is further inland and it never stopped Capt. James Cook)

A broad search of a William Watson marrying a Jane shows other in the London area which I don't think matches.

They could have married anywhere especially as he was a Sailor
