Title: Deciphering occupation

Hi
The image is the father's occupation on a child's birth registration. It is a 1916 birth registration, location is St Helens Tasmania Australia.
The person was certified as an engine driver in mining.
Any help appreciated.

My only guess is "Hotel Asst", which doesn't seem very mining related. Did you find him as an engine driver before or after this 1916 record, as it's possible he could have left the mining industry?

On Australian electoral rolls from 1914 and 1919 (before and after this 1916 record) he's simply listed as a 'miner'.
His competency certificate as an engine driver is from 1918.
I had thought it was hotel, but looking at surrounding text, the first letter might be a "W".

Hmm!!

Well, the H of Harriet and H. Brown is quite different.  (I like that she is the Mosher (mother)  ;D
On the other hand St Helens H is similar. :-\

Am I correct in interpreting the birth as being registered by the mother? In which case is it her occupation?

At the time, the column was always Rank or Profession of Father.
