Morning all
Said I would be here to begin the week.

I expect most people are busy this week  I am going to pace myself out after having  such a busy week last week.

Really nice Carol service  last night, one of the Rev's said the church was packed,  so many new faces which is nice,  it is only a village but we had a lot from outside, pays to leaflet  the area.

Enjoy your week folks

Pouring down heavily with rain this morning and forecast to do the same tomorrow, but it's fairly warm with it.  With a nasty cold which has prevented me from taking part in various events in the village over the last week I am staying at home and keeping away from other people.  Don't want to spoil their Christmas! Last week I was sitting next to a woman at choir practice who told me that she was just recovering from a nasty cold.  Two days later I started with the usual symptoms of a sore throat, which developed into a cold over the next few days.  I can only think it came from her. :(

But hey, I'm already organised for Christmas.  Puddings and cake were made months ago, mince pies last week.  Our Christmas dinner will be held at my daughter's, so no worries about the bird and accompaniments.  Cards have been written and sent and presents are just waiting to be wrapped.  Even my library books are booked out till January.  The decorations are up. Just need to polish the brass and copper pieces to reflect the lights.  My husband has managed to source some LED tealights on the net (from China, of course ::)) - couldn't find any in the shops, so I suppose they had already been snapped up.

Merry Christmas, everyone  :D

A cold very dark, very wet day today.
Spent hours on the phone booking transport to Heart  Failure clinic .but it is so good to have it ,there is hardly any parking for cars due  to extensive building work ,heavy plant stuff .How staff manage I don’t know .

Will do apple sauce today and freeze it ,in two batches ,so one for New Year .
If I am doing that however will be a gammon joint with good old 1960’s pineapple !

All windows now done - just the rest of the house !  ::)

Son’s bed changed ,not back until  weekend .

Hope all are alright, given quite a few are elderly and thus with the problems commensurate with age! ( That is my big word for this week.)
Next week ‘s could be  antidisestablishmentarianism !
I think that is the longest word in the Oxford English Dictionary!
I hardly ever use it these days!  ::)

Well must crack on folks - you do delay me with your interesting snippets !
I am so curious I can’t wait to read them all.
Cheerio for now. Viktoria.

Can’t believe it’s just over a week until Christmas… where has the time gone!
Recovered now from our Christmas Fayre and trips to London… we made just over £1000 for our charity.. I would have liked a bit more but in these economic time that’s pretty good.
Started off nice and sunny this morning, bit of a nip in the air but now clouding over of course as I’m out at my book club this afternoon.
Cards posted, hand delivered so pleased with that..
Yesterday afternoon I spent wrapping family gifts.. I don’t use wrapping paper I’ve made Christmas fabric squares of various sizes with button and ribbon on opposite sides so gifts are folded into fabric and ribbon tied round.. I get them back so reusable and no paper wastage or piles of it to stuff into black bags.

I made my daughter a hamper with all manner of useful kitchen bits + t towels, home made chocs, chutney, and rapeseed oil that comes from a farm in the village..a bit different so hope she likes it 🤞.

House all decorated .. I love all the little LED twinkly lights you get these days too..
Just need family to be healthy.. all suffering from colds so 🤞they’ll be fine next week.. eldest grandson just had intensive exams and studied hard so bit run down I think.. thankfully they’ve all had flu jabs.

Sorry to hear others unwell… such a shame to miss out on fun and enjoyable events at this time of year.. hope all will be better by next week.
Our Carol service is this coming weekend but going to miss it as other plans got in the way.. pity as we have a new vicar who seems a nice chap…
He even turned up at our Christmas Fayre which has got to be a first in the 38 years we’ve lived in the village. Trouble is these days they have split their time between about four parishes so can’t be easy.
Well must away .. take care and enjoy the cooking, decorating and all that Christmas entails.

Saw the orthopaedic surgeon this morning. Yes my right hip does need "doing"- but between 8 and 12 months waiting list so I guess I shall have to hang in there. Interestingly it was the same chap who did my left knee back in 2011. rj
Title: Re: Diary summary week ending 21st December 2025
Post by: louisa maud on Monday 15 December 25 15:56 GMT (UK)
Sadly RJ,  that is the way it is going, I had my hip replaced 19 years ago,  as I was deemed young it was " not cemented" they do say they possibly don't last more than 10 years,  proved them wrong but that might be an average, not putting my hand or hip up for another one unless I need it.

You folks are so organised, apart from cleaning the upstairs curtains and windows plus my large lounge front I have come to a halt, I was so busy last week, was hoping for a quieter week this week.

I saw in a large department shop last week a beautiful tin of biscuits,  stupidly didn't buy it then as I had to travel by bus, had a look in my nearest one and asked an assistant, no, they didn't have them, I suspect because it was such a big store she might not have known, rang the shop today, the hint was I needed to book and order, I don't want a shop on line from this particular shop,  so I will have to look elsewhere I suppose for something similar, sometimes I think it is never easy.

When I worked full time and had 8  to stay for  Christmas  I was well and truly organised, my organisation in  the house has gone to pot, thankfully I am not catering for 8 this year.

Our church again had this good idea to make a donation and not to send cards, I did that but still I am receiving  cards, after Christmas so many go into recycling it is a waste, so now I have to reciprocate,  grrrr!!

Apart from church activities  it doesn't feel like Christmas at all.

Don't work to hard folks.

I seem to be leaving sooooo much to the eleventh hour!
I do miss having my front parlour ,I could thoroughly “ bottom “ , that, close the door and a quick “tickle “ on Christmas Eve  and all O.K .
But now we live in the front room , so every day stuff on view up to the last minute!- so every day a good tidy!
Never mind, I tell myself, thousands would love to have my modest home especially those in danger zones, the homeless and people truly poor.

Well lots done today ,just ironed son’s bedding .
His bed remade this morning, back from Head Office at weekend.
Can close the door, now, I am doing no more in there.

Watched Laurence Olivier in Richard III ———I never  liked  his
“ strangulated“  voice. I was busy but could see and hear it.
Poor Richard, he seems the most likely candidate responsible for Edward IV’s sons’ disappearance , pity now we have his remains that the bones in Westminster Abbey, found in The Tower, believed to be those of the young Princes  can not be compared , but The Queen said the urn must never be opened .
Daughter just phoned, son having a whale of a time with Luca and Kyra ,and baby Lily— she was a bit reticent but he got her shrieking with laughter .
He always gets down to children’s level.

Well I phoned our Doctor’s today re an appointment ,would the Drs be on strike,———Well the receptionist had no idea what I was talking about ,———-?
I wasn’t sure if only Drs in Hospitals were involved in the pending strike .

Cheerio folks. Hope all are doing well.
Congrats to those who have given time and effort to their Church’s good causes ,good results folks.

A cup of tea and “ Once more unto the breech dear friends ! “ Agincourt , Prince Hal?

Look after yourselves , and thanks for the news , you are really hard workers, and give your time to many needy causes.
Cheerio. Viktoria.

Good to read there has been some contact with KG and that some are on target with the festive preps, not so good re the seasonal ails and painful mobility issues with hopefully some reprieve  * relief asap.
I've become rather familiar with our drs clinic this past week and perhaps I'm also becoming more recognisable to our doctor as he'd only seen me the once prior for an introductory appointment. He's just popping into the nurses station to check each visit that all is OK and he removed sutures in ankle/heel wound yesterday and another look tomorrow. All visits ACC covered ( as accident ) so doesn't hurt the pocket and thankfully it has been comfortable for getting out and about with backless shoes ... just waiting to be able to immerse foot in the water again  :)

We have tickets for the matinee session of a Christmas production up north on Saturday, shows start Thursday night this week and started to sell out early. Our 3 year old granddaughter is the youngest cast member but also has her 2 older sisters and parents on stage as well and there have been rehearsals for a few months now, daughter is understudy for about 5 parts so hopefully all will be well!  Their previous shows have been very well performed and they've enjoyed participation under the direction of the couple who bring them together so well.

* I was rushing a bit to get dinner prep done .. some ailments do seem a bit punishing! ... liked your use of weekly words Viktoria  ;)

An update from me.
Ended up having 3 procedures on my bladder stones!
So in hospital all of October.
Before all that I collapsed at home, which was blamed on a UTI.

Meanwhile laptop crashed, so now having to use phone.
Also various logins turned off due to inactivity!
Gradually getting things fixed..

Had yet another Christmas card with a letter to say they won't be sending Christmas  cards from now on, donating to charity,  seems as if charities will do  well if everyone donates to charities,  my card list  is getting shorter and shorter, haven't got to that stage yet as I do enjoy receiving  and giving cards, having said that our church has tried to suggest donations and no cards, I agree with that and have made my donation but still I have received cards and I am embarrassed  into reciprocating.

Title: Re: Diary summary week ending 21st December 2025
Post by: Gillg on Tuesday 16 December 25 11:40 GMT (UK)
Like you, LM, I do enjoy receiving cards.  It's a way of keeping up to date with old friends and if I don't receive a card from them I'm afraid that I assume that they have died!  Of course, some of the cards I do receive recite a litany of illnesses or partners' deaths, so that can get a bit depressing, too.  Well, I'm still sending mine, though we do make a donation at Christmas time to a chosen charity and I hope that the charity cards we buy send at least some of their receipts to the charity they represent.  So far this year we have received over 30, delivered through the post or by hand.

I have made the mistake of opening the annual Q....y S...t chocolates box a bit too early and my husband has been helping himself rather liberally to them!  Since they have started wrapping the chocolates in paper rather than foil they don't look quite so decorative in the bowl.  Also there aren't so many in the box as they used to be and they look smaller, too.  And why has coffee cream, my favourite, disappeared recently? >:(
Title: Re: Diary summary week ending 21st December 2025
Post by: Caw1 on Tuesday 16 December 25 12:23 GMT (UK)
I quite agree Gillg… they’ve made lots of chocs smaller, more expensive and they don’t taste as chocolatey as they used to…
having read an article in The Times the other day prices of raw ingredients… the main part of the confection , have gone up and other things are added to keep that choc taste…
but I think some are definitely not what they used to be! Of course smaller sizes doesn’t mean lower prices if anything they’ve gone up 😳..
The trouble is that as you get older you remember how things used to be it would seem with much more clarity and I feel for people who will never know how good it was!
As to cards I love to send them as I make all my own and get great pleasure from doing so.. I like receiving them too but sadly often with bad news inside or not at all.. I do give to local charities rather than the big national ones as I’m never sure how much they actually receive.
Our family, on my mothers side, have never been good communicators and today after a phone call to a cousin I discovered her husband passed away in July and a 2nd cousin ( mid 50’s) passed away 2-3 yrs ago … I didn’t ask her why she didn’t think to contact me!
The sad thing is that we live within about 50 miles of each other! Hey ho that’s families for you.
Wet, dark and miserable today and I have an emergency dental appointment this a/noon which I’m not looking forward to.
Hope everyone else is not suffering from these seasonal bugs, flu etc and if they are then 🤞 all will be well for next week.

I thought I had done all mine.BUT- I seem to have too many stamps left to have done all the cards on my list!
Oh dear ,nothing I can do now, they are ticked off my list
I imagine quite a few people will not be sending but I just hope if I have missed any out they are people not sending this year !

A lovely day ,bright abd sunny .

Starting to get a few decorations up ,mostly greenery ( expensive imitation ivy and holly from an Italian holiday ,you really can’t tell the difference. Bought years  ago.)

I had a job finding a little silver trumpet at least 90 years old —- survived the Manchester blitz of 1940 ,in a sorry state now and so enclosed in a little
plastic  bag, but the last thing from my childhood .
Sentimental old thing that I am.

Well, post van here,it is very late.

Back to the grindstone —-after a cuppa!

So glad we're hearing from you again, KGarrad - you may not know how much we all worried about you!
Just had visit from two female fire-fighters, "doing" the area, I believe partly as a result of a very serious fire nearby, the other week - and they fitted two new fire alarms, checked our monoxide monitors, and grab rails / fire exclusion door through to garage, etc. Nice to get checked over.

Whenever Christmas time comes around my mind goes back to our last visit to Australia in October 2019. We had planned to visit Canberra, about 150 miles from Bega NSW. On the way we planned to call at the Bredbo Christmas Barn. Unfortunately on our outward journey the barn was not open, but on our return a few days later it was. And so we stopped to take in the almost unbelievable sight inside.
Stacked to the rafters with all things Chritmassy, from baubles and bangles to gifts for Christmas of all shapes and sizes.
You want a full size Santa with sleigh and reindeer- come to Bredbo!
The sheer size and range of goods was so impressive.  And not just for locals, but visitors not only from across the state of NSW but across the whole country and I daresay beyond.

And so with that picture in  mind I wish all our contributors a very Happy Christmas and Bright New Year.

Son still at Head Office.
I can do so much when I’m on my own!

Fed the cake with brandy .I use an old syringe the Vet  gave me (with a new needle ),after an injection my dog needed ,all washed out and sterilised I might add!

Think we’re going to get all the heavy rain tomorrow!
Visited a friend who had a stroke and was in Aylesbury hospital for three months.. left side very poor still.. unable to do anything with her left arm.. left leg very difficult to walk.. but she didn’t suffer speech loss and she’s so positive…
they have huge sprawling house lots stairs so she’s restricted where she can go fortunately got a lift to get up to bedrooms.
Husband has Parkinson’s and prostate cancer! Both are remarkably positive but need lots of help! Three daughters live nearby ….
Will help where I can but they really could do with live in help or move to somewhere on one level and smaller!
Good luck with your hospital trip Viktoria… hope Mares injury is improving and Gillyg getting over her cold!
Off to the hospital myself on Friday to have a nerve test on my right arm after the fall I had in April where I landed on my outstretched right arm… trying to save my phone & glasses… dumb thing to do.. arm giving me jip and X-ray shows some floating bone in elbow area…
Finally sorted out with my daughter this morning whose doing what for Christmas so can now get organised… she wants me to do a gammon cooked with cola… sounds horrible but she assures me it tastes good… I shall reserve judgement.
Tesco coming in the am so better get some sleep!

All the best to all and a very Happy Christmas and New Year..

I fell exactly the same a few years ago, very painful, my zdr told me to get under a hot shower and gradually creep my hand up the wall,  it helped eventually , my left arm, was surprising how restricted it was, could do certain things up but I got there I the end.

Viktoria,  how is your mobile scooter, do you not use it on your own?, hope your trip to the hospital gets good results.

Hope everyone under the weather for all sorts of reasons perks  up for Christmas.

Having a can't sleep night so hope this makes sense  at this unearthly hour.

Yes,gammon in coca cola, Delia Smith’s recipe.
Surprisingly good .
Off to Health Centre this morning for a Thyroid function check——-.
Muse mention the Heart Nurse’s concern re the high level of Vitamin D and calcium for brittle bones ,it seems it is very high and that is of concern re my arteries .If it is not one thing it is another!
Now my scooter, it sits in its shed with 0.6 miles on the clock.
If  anything was to happen again and I was alone I have no idea what I would be able to do ,my son was with me when the tyre cane off a front wheel just down my road. I hate it ,really do.
Not thinking about that until after Christmas ,but thanks for thinking about me  and IT!——

Yes best wishes to all those unwell or undergoing treatment .
Snap.L.M. I worked really hard yesterday  but not a wink of sleep.- Dud alphabetically  all the rivers of the world, trees, flowers ,mountain ranges , ricapital cities ——- but no,tried to empty my mind but still awake.
That means I will nod off this afternoon , so possibly no sleep tonight either .
Never mind , I am my own boss so I call the rules.

Son back at weekend ,so help if needed  with  last minute shopping .
Daughter in law made it clear she was not doing Christmas dinner by saying she  would do the meat  and they’d bring it here ,that is the biggest worry but
never mind ,,we will get through .
They have a lovely home but never entertain ,I don’t think they can possibly  live there ,it is showroom pristine .
Not like mine! I think vandals get in and leave things lying about ,so I won’t forget them. ::)

Well off toHealth Centre .

Thanks LM for the suggestion as to what to do with my arm! I can lift it straight up, hold it out sideways and put it behind my back… I can’t raise my arm bending at the elbow palm facing the body and touch my shoulder and some exercises in yogalates where I need to weight bear on both arms is a challenge..no strength so have to do it one armed!
Sorry you’ve had a sleepless night.. I get those too, turn the light on and read or do crosswords!

Thanks too Viktoria with reassurance about cola ham.. I could only find a Nigella recipe or Good Food … cooks in slow cooker for 7 hrs..
Hope you get a better nights sleep too!
Once Christmas is over we’ll all be sleeping like baby’s 😂😂.. to much going round in the old brain box for restful sleep unless you have a good slug of something alcoholic..

Well must get on few more fabric wraps to make for pressies..
Lemon curd for lemon roulade.. more sausage rolls and so it goes on

Take care

Oh, the shops are packed this morning!  I tried to shop for 2 weeks, but will still need to buy some fresh fruit and veg next week.  When I defrosted my ancient freezer (used to belong to my mother and is around 25 years old) and my fridge freezer yesterday I found that I had rather a lot of meat and fish, so don't need any more of those.  Also a few mystery items - really must label everything properly when I put it in.

We will eat Christmas Dinner at my daughter's, so I don't have to worry about that.  My job, as always, is to make the Christmas pudding and sauces, also a large iced cake, and that's all done, so I can relax and concentrate on getting better after my croaky cold.

Heavy rain today as forecast.  Tomorrow may be drier, but there's a lot of rain ahead.  On the other hand it's not cold. (Trying to be cheerful ;))

Merry Christmas everyone.  :D  Keep warm, safe and healthy. :)

Viktoria,  you are very sensible with the use of your scooter, think I would be wary on my own.

I went to church this morning then went to the local shops, at 11am, crammed, so drove out and went visiting  an old friend, was told all veg was reduced to rock bottom prices, perhaps that's  why everyone was shopping at 11am this morning,  hope their veg last till Christmas,  I hate waste.

My sleepless nights,  can't read in bed as it disturbs the other half,  I shan't last the day but as Viktoria  said it has a knock on effect .

Take care.

Whilst I have cut back this year on using Postman Pat for Christmas Greetings it is still nice to receive cards via this method from friends and relations.
We used always to look forward to hearing the thud of cards on the mat. Our first job was to look at the handwriting and the Sorting Office code to see if we could guess who they were from.
But these days much of that fun has gone out of the window. Sorting Office codes are on a wide regional basis, are often smudged or indecipherable and a lot of folk use pre-printed self adhesive address labels.
Out of eight cards received this morning I was only able to identify two of the senders (correctly!).
Is there anyone else out there with such odd practices??????  rj

I used to do the same Jeff, but as you say it has become almost impossible.

I have also cut back on cards, having told many friends I would, but still have received more than I sent. I do stick a return address label on some because the recipients are elderly and I  hope if they have passed away then someone will let me know.  It didn’t quite work out with a relative in a care home, I got the card back but they simply wrote “Gone away” on the unopened envelope,

Almost always a mystery one .
Despite having things to do ,I am partly watching the film Anastasia ,with Ingrid  Bergman.
I feel very strongly thr “imposter “ Anna Andersen was the Grand Duchess, though how’s she  got awayI can’t imagine .
The’”imposter “  had two identifiable things,a deformed foot in the shape of a very pronounced bunion ,even at her young age , also her finger had been trapped in a carriage door just as a grand parade was to begin , it always was stiff after .
She recounted a meeting between her father The Tsar, and Prince Maurice of Battenberg , her mother’s relative, during WW1 .
Germany and  and Russia were at war of course so it was thought impossible such a meeting would take place .
Later ,released state papers proved there had indeed such a meeting .
However she survived and got away from Ekaterinburg is impossible to imagine.
She developed Tuberculosis of the sternum ,it was an illness in the family.
There are photographs of the summer residence at Tsarsko Selo ,with the children’s’ toys and nursery as it was  left ,very poignant .
The family generally did not like the Tsarina ,and wanted the Tsar’s brother to acceed to the throne ,as being stronger and more capable .
Ah well, a sad story ,but I can’t remember what tests were done on the remains found in the forest ,whatever , they’d were interred as if they were the Royal Family .
We can never really know .
Autocrats they were undoubtably ,but did not deserve such an end .
I read so much about them ,years ago , it fascinated me .
Our Royal family played  it cool,The Dowager Empress was Queen Alexandra’s sister ,Revolution was feared here,so scant support from our Royal Family .

I have a photograph album ,given to me by a neighbour - of a holiday spent on the Russian Royal yacht “ Standart” ,published by Queen Alexandra to raise funds for her charity .Cheerio.

I always felt that it was mean of George V not to support his cousin, the Tsar, by offering him and his family sanctuary during the Russian Revolution.  I suppose in those times of revolution royal families were wondering if it would be their turn next.

I was never sure about Anastasia and the film only confused me more.  I could not see how she could have escaped her family's awful assassination.

Nor do I but the finger injury and foot deformity plus the memory which was validated do seem to give the woman some gravitas .
The remains that were found are buried in - I suppose St.Basil’s Cathedral .
I don’t think they deserved that end ,they were so far removed from everyday reality they had no real idea of ordinary people’s lives.
The Tsarina was a depressive character ,and anxious —- no male heir and fell prey to Rasputin, a mountebank if ever there was one!
Ah!Well ,as Gillig said ,there were rumours of Revolution here ,so our Royals had to be very careful.
I can’t imagine a country with no Monarchy -
Cheerio folks .Look after yourselves .

Doing a bit more sifting and clearing of old paperwork this morning I came across our diary for the 2019 visit to the family down under. This entry suggests that even on main roads the traffic is not so heavy as to make way for local wildlife.
Out from Bega to Candelo and then on via Wyndham and Cathcart, where there was an old church building in the middle of nowhere, and on to Bombala, a former timber centre town with a rail link, long gone, up to Canberra. And so across the Monaro tablelands, lots of open space and thousands of sheep, but very little in the way of human existence. As we got back on the main highway, the Snowy Mountain Highway near to Nimitabell, there was a hold up in the traffic- to allow a dear little Echidna cross the road. And so back down the Brown Mountain via Bemboka (ant the pie shop!) to home base back at Bega.

Dilemma. All my Christmas decoration stuff is up in the attic. The last time Mark was here I forgot to ask him to get it down for me as I am banned from climbing the ladder to get into the loft!. I only really needed the card holders as there is very little room on any of the book shelves to put cards.
So, what to do with all my lovely cards? Well here is my answer. Simples!

That is quite a hard schedule L.M. and you have been so busy of late.
I am being more sensible than usual ,it is all over in a day really .
A friend used to laugh at me - a Spring clean before Christmas!
She did it after ,when all decorations cleared away when there seemed more time and no deadline!.
Houses are easier to clean nowadays and things don’t get so dirty without coal fires and less air pollution.

But old habits die hard .

A shop tomorrow, oldest son will come to help me as second son not yet back.
Well cheerio , take care .
Viktoria.

Goodness me LM I’m tired just thinking about being out by 7.30am!
As my OH would say.. what time do you call that!
We’re retired we don’t have to get up early… says the man who gets up at 6.30 once a week to play golf!
This week it was still dark when they teed off and they couldn’t see their balls… daft idiots.
I’ve never understood spring cleaning before Christmas… it needs doing afterwards!
Well I’m not cooking Christmas dinner either but I might just as well be with all the things my daughter keeps adding to my list..
Meal for the 6 of us on Christmas Eve… easy lasagne!
Cooking the ham… sausage rolls, cauliflower cheese.. lemon dessert as alternative to Christmas pudding.
I’ve made 2 jars lemon curd, 3 jars cranberry sauce, two tubs of red cabbage, gingerbread biscuits..

Hospital appointment today for nerve test on the arm I landed on in my fall in April… in and out in 20 minutes the hospital was very quiet..
Result no nerve damage to that arm but the other one she said I need a carpel tunnel op as it’s in poor state… I knew that over 30 yrs ago when I had the right hand done but never got round to it..
I said that after all that time and at my age I didn’t think I’d bother!
I don’t know you go in for one thing and come out with something else!!
It gave us time afterwards to do last bits of shopping not as disastrous as we thought.. thankfully.
Hope that’s it now other than bit of fresh veg and I might be up early as greengrocers opens at 6am… but maybe not quite that early 😂😂.

Jeff I love your card rack idea.. might be difficult to dry your washing though!

Yesterday was quite  eventful. It turned out very wet, as forecast, with localised flooding in some areas. Not here thank goodness.  Just as I settled down after lunch to watch something on T V the power went off. With no sign of it coming on again, after an hour I dug out an old battery radio and sat and listened to Classic FM and read a library book  I had already downloaded on the iPad.

It started getting dark so I put torches, candles and matches at the ready.  Luckily, I had plenty of cheese and crackers to feast on and with a gas hob was able to boil water for a hot drinks. Annoyingly I had to miss a Family History Society Christmas Zoom meeting. :'(

With no Internet, my mobile  battery running low and my landline and lifeline dead, the house was starting to get cold so I went up to bed at nine, at least the stairlift battery meant I was able to get up stairs. When I drew the curtains I could see the workmen digging up the road. I settled down in bed to read some more but dozed off quite quickly. I  was sleeping well for once when I was woken at twenty to two by  the lights coming on and the landline phone ringing with a recorded message telling  me the power was back on and what number to ring if it wasn’t.  ::)

I don’t know how I stand the excitement.

Oh Jebber- excitement of that sort we can do without ——so glad things are getting better .It is really very scary when such things happen ,but so much all at once.!

Lost my bus pass today!A quick trip to our little town centre - needed turnips - there is every Saturday a big stall onour market ,good fresh stuff but the stallholder adds up in his head and you have no idea what you are paying for, he us quite surly and so I don’t ask prices !
However he was not there today - many people were quite bewildered ,he would have been very busy  .

Got home and tipped my handbag out and there was my pass- not in its little wallet as it usually is .
Had to pay £2 each way !

Managed to get two cancellations at the hairdressers ,a trim on Christmas Eve then a blow dry New Year’s Eve !
No idea what to have done!
A fourpenny all off!

I wanted a tub of Haribo ,my son  hasn’t got a sweet tooth but he does like those .I had to get lots of little packets .
Got Guliyan chocolate shells for daughter in law, and marzipan fruits for eldest son ,I give money but like to give a little present too, they are very good to me.
Grandson phoned  today ,just a chat ,he is a really nice person .
Flash Harry and Kyra’s daddy .
Hope they are up soon .

Well time for tea, an exotic meal,of vegetarian sausages ,mashed potatoes and tinned peas, Bachelor’s finest emerald green ones .
I too do not know how I stand such excitement!

Keep well folks and take care.
Jebber I hope all really is well now.
Cheerio . Viktoria.

Glad you found your bus pass Viktoria, thankfully it was in your bag and not completely lost,  you won’t have to apply for a replacement.

Everything is back to normal here, dare I say everything is working and the hose is warm, I hope it stays that way.🤞

I’m just watching the big freeze of 1962. I don’t know how my mother coped, just her and a friend in a ten room house with no central heating. No man around to deal with any problems. No wonder she decided to sell up after that.  My husband and I with our 17 month old son missed it all, we had just arrived at our positing in Malta  so only knew about it from letters from home.

1962 was horrendous.  We lived in a small village and most houses were frozen out.  Luckiy I was away from home during the week, but my lodgings too were frozen. I had to wash etc. at work every day, then go back to another frozen house.  Again, I was lucky in that my "aunt" was unfrozen, so I could have my weekly bath and hair wash.  Deep joys!  8)

I had just met my husband on holiday in Aug 1961 but didn't start going out with him till Jan 62, last  night I tried to recall the 1962 big freeze, the heating  we had at home was an oil fired heater you could move about , wouldn't be allowed now, esso blue dealer comes to mind, I think we were so used to being cold it didn't have much impact, not like it does now even with central heating,  having changed to a combi boiler our house is nowhere as warm as when we had a back boiler

I am up at silly o'clock not being able  to sleep and I need to be up at 7am .

Oh Caroline that is a classic

Just had such a belly laugh, I nearly pulled a chest muscle!

Goodness me LM I’m tired just thinking about being out by 7.30am!

Caroline, you must remember that Golf is like a Religion!

Yes, Jebber and BumbleB, we had a 3 storey Victorian/ Edwardian Town House with Sash Windows that kept the house well ventilated with plenty of draughts! But there was still frost on the inside of the windows when getting up in the morning and we were not the Servants.

The Servants below stairs would have had the Cooking Range lit and Upstairs all the bedrooms originally had fireplaces.

Added:
Searching the subscription sites, it had been the home of the Assistant Director of Education and family over 110 years ago and after that, the family earned their income by watching and analysing time!

Glad LM that you get a Till specially opened, I don't like those pesky cards either and still want to pay cash.

Perhaps really they open a Till because they think LM stands for Lady Majesty.

Glad you have a warm house Jebber, mine is warm too, but my Smart Meter has filled up the Red and also the Crimson and saying my Weekly "Budget Exceeded". I feel sorry for the Installer's family if he thinks he can heat, cook and light his house on the silly weekly amount he set.

Someone dressed as Viktoria was nearly getting free bus rides. Glad you found your pass and I do that too, everything is back on my person, or in my back pack and when I do a check back at home, I think oh I lost it, but usually find I've not put it back in my usual / always place.

Jeff, your family want you to avoid any lofty ideas going up the step ladder.

"King George V did not help Tsar Nicholas II primarily because of the political dangers that hosting the deeply unpopular Romanovs would have" ...

"The decision was a complex political calculation involving the British government and the King's advisors" ...

"King George V's refusal to grant asylum to Tsar Nicholas II did not directly change the course or outcome of World War I. The key events that affected the war—the Russian Revolution and subsequent withdrawal from the conflict—had already been set in motion" ...

I don't think it made any difference to WW 1.

My Gt Grandfather was a Butler for an Aristocratic family who were friends of George V.

My late Grandfather discussed the matter at great length with me and to keep politics and this outside pressure out of a family decision.

I like that Mark but I must not get ideas above my station to rise myself to a Lady, don't suppose it will happen again, I don't like the self service tills and if I ever I use one for just a few items I have to call for help  or the machine shouts out " something I the bagging area, "  yes, it's me!!, thing is I have never seen anyone  double check what is in the bagging area, they click the machine and off you go again.

Who can believe that this time best week Christmas will be all over.

Take care

Hello Louisa and All

I can use self service most times, but ...

At one Aldi Branch, several times when my shopping went over a certain number of items or weight, the Assistant would have to put her code in and override the weight after every item scanned.

Yes, one week and we will be on the 28th.

Have a nice time and be good all, as I don't want to hear Reports from all over, that you have been dancing on the tables in the various venues at 4am in the morning.

I'm mid-60s but lost some vigour and vitality. Apart from local walks (provided we get a dry day), I'll be at home, trying to keep my health and digestion system from flaring up. Had a few days each week of belly pain, that moves about.

One thing, I'm getting several red marks (blemishes) in my facial skin about once every 5-6 weeks and skin then looks a bit aged, then small bits peel off face, blemishes disappear and then new facial skin about every 6 weeks!

Glad to hear that KGarrard has checked in.

You take care LM and take care all, Mark

My very handy little counter top oven has gone crazy today,I must get a new one asap ,it is really handy , can bake ,grill and keep things warm ,a Russell Hobbs .
Had it a good few years ,microwave on last legs too, just the right time of year!
Don’t want a combination .

Hospital tomorrow, noon, so must be up early ,they often come for me hours prior to the appointment time .
Son is back but will be working and a three way computer conference at mid day, so not available.
Well an early nightI think ,got to Church this morning ,Vicar’s little boy was there ,the same age as Lilly, but rather shy ,understandably, just a little over 12 months but walking well.
Look after yourselves folks . Cheerio.Viktoria.

Bushinn - golf can be as much of a religion as you like but you must have a screw loose to get up at that time in the morning..IN THE WINTER.. and then moan you can’t see the ball off the first tee. 😂😂. In the summer it’s a lovely time to be out..

It’s incredible how electric..(vital) bits of equipment can decide to give up the ghost at the most inappropriate times of the year!
Who are these gremlins that decide to be fine one day then not the next!
I thought my hob had died a death on Friday when I was busy using it and it suddenly stopped 😳😳… but it turned out to be a false alarm..thankfully.

Well all presents wrapped and ready to go to our daughters on Wednesday… except for my OH’s gift to me.. which I bought, folded for him and even found a tag from last year he can resuse!
I might even end up wrapping it as he’ll say he can’t get his head round how to use the fabric wraps I have…
I always thought he was intelligent but I’m beginning to wonder 😂😂..

Well Monday tomorrow and time is closing in so last lot of cooking to do tomorrow and Tuesday…
I quite like the self checkouts as it’s quicker.. and in Waitrose I scan my goods put straight into my bags then no need for more repacking.. I find it suits me.. but understand if people not keen on it.

Take care all
Caroline

A dry day here with a bit of sun, so the last wash has just been hung out and fresh bedding, towels, etc. will be put out for the celebrations, though I'm not looking forward to the mountain of ironing which will await me later.  The decorations ("understated", my daughter says) look rather nice, I think.  OH is already tucking in to Christmas biscuits and the rather pathetic Q S - too much paper wrapping and too little chocolate.  :o  I am really thinking that I won't buy any next year.  I hear M&S have a good equivalent this year - has anyone tried them?

All the food preparations are finished and we will be eating at my daughter's.  Just need to take my pudding (Grannie's recipe) and accompanying sauces (thanks again, M&S  ;))

Best wishes to you all for a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.  :-*

Got a few spam emails ,purporting to come from BT,son had a look and the logo was missing a full stop and my name was not used ,unlike the usual emails that are unusually familiar, first name etc.
The last saying to contact someone with a very unusual foreign name!
Hospital visit , no real problems , and not a long wait either.

Hair cut on Wednesday —— I won’t like it- almost never do !

Son went to our lovely farm shop and got some turnips ,none in the three supermarkets .
Carrots, turnips and swedes ,all buttery and peppery mmmm.

Got to marzipan the cake, not icing it ——- my teeth are aching thinking of all that sugar ,also mince pies to be made .

Well daughter will phone in a bit, so Cheerio folks, look after yourselves.
Viktoria.
