I have Hugh Clements (clemont, clemens, clemints) b. 1825 whitehaven, cumbria to Edward & Mary Ann.
He married Jane Hutchison abt.1848 and is listed in 1841 cen as coal miner in ferry hill, Durham.
A wedding (as Clemints) in 1859 st andrews aukland, to Rachael Madgan (also of whitehaven)
1871 cen, as a fruit dealer, West Cornforth.
Rachael died between the '81 & '91 census.
As '91 shows Hugh (Clemons) with wife Hannah, of Hetton le Hole, in West Rainton.
Hugh died in 1900 at Lanchester.
I'm looking for Jane, Rachael & Hannahs deaths. along with Hannahs maiden name & wedding.
I have had no joy with freebmd, Family Search, FindMyPast, Ancestry or Find a Grave.
-
Did he have any children with Hannah? If so the birth registration should reveal her maiden name.
-
Rachael died between the '81 & '91 census.
Are you assuming that because he is with a new "wife" in 1891? If there is no marriage to Hannah then Rachael could still be alive just separated from her husband.
-
What was the last child he had with Jane? That should narrow down her death.
Edward Clements Jun 1854 and Henry Clements Jun 1856 have mothers maiden name Hutchinson
Also William Clemonts Jun 1852
Do you have the 1861 census details please?

Thank you Softly Softly & Milliepede.
Interesting connection with Whitehaven & Jane & Rachael. I had not considered Madge.
I have 4 kids listed with Jane but nothing with Rachael or Hannah.
There is another Hugh marrying in co durham in 53, but he is younger. He could be the one married to Hannah, but the occupations and ages in the census don't line up properly.
The young death of Edward lines up age wise.
The 2 daughters Mary Jane & liz. I have hit a wall. there are 2 Mary Jane weddings about the right age but they are confirmed different parents.
I suspect a grave stone somewhere has all the answers.

This birth answers a lot of questions. He's still alive in 1911/1921 but cannot find him from 1856 until 1911!!--that's 5 census

It may also suggest ,S.S, that the 1857 article I posted does refer to the Hugh and Jane being looked at. The address on this birth cert is Trimdon. The assault case was at Castle Eden Sessions which appear to have dealt with cases from Trimdon.
If indeed this is correct it would narrow down the time period to look for Jane's death.

Millmoor, my own belief is Jane did not die between 1857-1859 but set up home with a n other or remarried.

I should have added that she may have abandoned him!

Who needs Emmerdale for their excitement and drama!
Thank you Softly & Millmoor.

In reply to the 1861 census, to marry Rachael he would need to be divorced or widowed. It is odd Janes 2 are missing as well, at 11 & 12, still a bit young for the mines or domestic labour.
And why would her sister marry him?
I know they seem to recover from widowhood and re-marry with indecent haste (modern eyes) in that period.

Digressing a bit to Henry in the hope that earlier might find him with his mother? In 1921 and 1911 he is with his wife Jane.
!891 Census,
RG 12/4189/106/4

Henry Clemens, head, m, 36, coal miner, Quarrington* Co Durham
Jane do, wife, m, 36, new Seaham, do
Henry do, sons, 5, Wst Cornforth do
Jane do, daur, 2, do do
*(Quarrington not far from his actual birthplace of Trimdon)
Jane's birth: Jane Clemens, 3rd q 1888, Stockton 10a, 108, mother's maiden surname Boyle.
Which leads to Henry in 1881, a boarder with the Boyle family in Cornforth, plus their married daughter Jane Cuthbertson, RG 11/4902/26/46
Marriage Henry Clemens and Jane Cuthbertson, 4q 1886, Easington 10a, 505.
But can't yet find him earlier than 1881 :-\
He is very challenged re his birthplace - it's different on every census. In 1881 it's Ferryhill.
