Title: LAWLER/JONES/FEARON/MULHOLLAND familes Frizington
Post by: ReJen on Friday 12 December 25 01:23 GMT (UK)
Hello,
Margaret Lawler moved to Frizington around some time in 1870's, she was a widow with two daughters in the 1881 census and lived in Yeathouse Road, Dyke Nook, Moor Street, then Tysor Street. She's recorded as being the cleaner of St Joseph's school.

She may have been married to a John Lawler who died in 1877.

Her younger daughter Mary may have been a teacher at the school. Can anyone suggest how I can find out if this was true?

Mary married Joe Jones who worked in Lonsdale Mining Co. until he was injured in the war.

Margaret adopted two girls, Susan 'Susie' Fearon and Eliza/Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Mulholland. After Margaret died in 1921 the remaining family moved to Lancashire, and Susie did, too, but I haven't managed to find out what became of Lizzie.

If anyone has links to these people, or information about the area, I'd be glad to hear back.

Have you checked 'Surnames interest board"?

Eliza Mulholland was registered 1897 mother's maiden name Creighton at Whitehaven.

The daughter of William Mulholland who married Jane Creighton 1896.
(The other daughters Mary and Ann were born illegitimately as Creighton).

---------------
Susan/Susie was registered as Susannah Fearon 1894 at Whitehaven with mother's maiden name Lacey. The daughter of Nicholas Fearon and Mary Ann Lacey who had married 1888.

I would get the birth certificate of Eliza Mulholland for her exact birth date.

Then you could search 1939 for Eliza/Elizabeth - no surname in Lancashire and Cumberland to narrow down the search.

Notes
Mary Martha Lawler married Joseph Edward Jones 1902 reg. Preston Lancashire

You state Susie went to Lancashire.

There is a Susan Fearon who married George E McAreavey 1919 reg. Whitehaven.
They are on the 1921 census with 2 female children. George was twice her age.

He died 1933 age 60, She married second Stephen McKeown 1935 reg. Whitehaven, they are still in Cumberland 1939.

ADDED
I don't think she adopted the girls, she was probably paid a stipend by the Catholic Church or Charity it ran to board the girls.

Margaret presented herself in England as a widow, yet her children are daughters of Margaret Lawler

no father listed.

Ancestry: Mary born 11 August 1879 of Margaret

Hello Warncoort,
Thanks, yes I have scanned through the "Surnames interest board" and I couldn't find anything related.
I discovered the Surname Interest Tables, which I can look at using.
I went through the Cumberland pages and there are some posts about Fearon, but I couldn't find any immediate links.
It's good to spend some time searching RootsChat - it's enormous!
As I've begun to learn a bit more about how RootsChat works, I think in future I would try separate posts for individuals and their specific records, rather than asking about families in general.

Hello amondg,
Thank you very much for that. The Susie and Lizzie information ties in with what I have. Lizzie was in Mount Pleasant, which I have been able to learn a bit more about in other threads and online - not so pleasant!
I will try and get Lizzie's birth certificate and date of birth, thanks for the tip.
I agree that Margaret was most probably paid a stipend, in the 1901 census Susie was recorded as 'nurse girl'. In my family they were 'adopted' in the broader sense and later Susie became 'Auntie Susie'.
Mary was working in Preston when she met Joseph Edward, they married in Lancashire then moved to Frizington where they lived next door to Margaret and Annie.

May I share my 'Margaret Working Theory' with you?
I think Margaret married John Lawlor in Wicklow 1871. She already had a daughter, Annie aged 2. They then moved to Cumberland, possibly Cleator Moor or Frizington. They had a John Lawler baptised 1873 St Mary's, Cleator Moor, birth registered 1874, Whitehaven, died 1874, Whitehaven.
Then they had a Mary Lawler born 1875 Whitehaven, baptised at St. Mary's, Cleator Moor 1875 and died 1876.
Then I have John Lawler died 1877, Whitehaven.
This would tie in with Margaret being a widow in the 1881 census.
My sticking point is that the daughter, Mary, being 2 in the 1881 census, and the daughter of John Lawler, would mean she would need to have been born in 1878.
I have looked in Cumberland and Wicklow (some of the census records say that Mary was born in Ireland, some in England) for Mary's birth record, but have nothing that matches.

Can you tell me more about the "Ancestry: Mary born 11 August 1879 of Margaret" please? Was there a location or Mother's maiden name?
I have considered that Mary was illegitimate, or even unofficially adopted, but this outcome would leave me with more questions and no easy way forward.

Kind regards, ReJen

It is a card index file on ancestry re Mary Lawlor and references Film number 256034, which I expect is a Family Search film number.

To test your theory you should get a copy of birth certificate either John reg. Whitehaven 1874 or Mary reg. Whitehaven 1875 to check the address where they were born and details of the mother and who registered the births. OR both.

GRO had mother's maiden name as Parall for John and Parling for Mary.

OR better yet get the death certificate for John Lawlor 1877 age 41, see who reported his death and his address and compare to census and baptism addresses.

GRO digital images are £3.

FreeBMD doesn't have a marriage that I can find at this time

Many thanks amondg,

The maiden name fits for Margaret who was Parle, Parell, Parnell and other variations.
I will try John Lawler's death certificate next.

Thanks for your help, Rejen

If you do that it would be better if you did one at a time giving us time to research each one rather than a bulk posting.  You will probably find that rootschatters will stray and look at siblings however you post your query.  We get carried away  ;D
