Title: Francis (Henry) Townley b abt 1827
Post by: LizzieL on Friday 05 December 25 11:00 GMT (UK)
Francis Townley (widower, occ: coachman) married Ann Gibbs (spinster) on 2 Nov 1862 at St John the Evangelist, Lambeth. Both were of full age and residence of both was Upper Stamford Street. Francis said his father was also called Francis and his occupation was solicitor. Witnesses John Spencer Thomas and Emma Thomas.
On 4th July 1883 a Francis Henry Townley age 54 (widower, licensed victualler) married Jane Savine 37, (spinster). Francis Henry's father was also called Francis Henry Townley (deceased, occupation solicitor.

I have found probate for a Francis Henry Townley died 22 Aug 1911, but proved 27 March 1922 to Francis Henry Townley. FHT jnr married in Sussex and his age at marriage gives a birth year of 1858, which leads to a mmn of Scrace, so that should be the first wife, but I cannot find a corresponding marriage

Is this the Francis who married Ann Gibbs the same as the one who married Jane Savine? signatures from marriage record attached. Can anyone find the first marriage of Francis Townley? can anyone find the death / burial of Ann Townley nee Gibbs. (She was baptised on 11 Feb 1827 d/o Thomas Gibbs and his wife Ann nee Phillips).

Thank you that's probably her, because I have just found the 1881 census, Ann, husband (recorded as Frank) and three children including Egbert are in Storrington. Francis was born abt 1829 in Hackney according to census.

In 1871 family is still in Sussex, Francis is a coachman b in Dalston abt 1831. So he's changing his age and the change in occupation matches with the two marriage records.

As Francis's 3rd marriage was in London I thought the move to Sussex was after 1883

In both Ann is b Tackley, Oxon abt 1827.

Francis was with his wife, Louisa, 26, in Lymington, Hampshire, in 1861. She was born in Wivelsfield, Sussex.

Her death is registered in Lymington in Q2 1861.

Their children were born with mother mmn Scrace, but I can't find a marriage.

Louisa baptised as Scrase on 21 December 1834 in Wivelsfield, Sussex, daughter of William and Mary.

Thank you again, I wouldn't have thought of looking in Lymington. Francis b in Dalston abt 1831 again on 1861 census. Strange that the marriage can't be found.

Francis, the licensed victualler, didn't desert his old link with horses. After transferring the Half Moon to Egbert in 1889 and taking over the Crown Hotel, Bishop Waltham -

Of course it is - failed to check age on the '91 Census.
Same Francis - Hampshire Chronicle, 19 April 1890. Dad must have trained him well -
