Title: Fred MELLOR, WW1
Post by: trevalyn on Tuesday 02 December 25 22:39 GMT (UK)
FRED MELLOR,  Royal Garrison Artillery, died 26 May 1920. Service number 131522.
Beyond that, I have found absolutely nothing!

Does anybody out there have any idea who Fred Mellor was?  Where was he from? Where did he die? And, of course, where is he buried?

#Any clue would be gratefully received.

What a fine thing is Rootschat!
Thank you for all your help.  I will concentrate on the Middleton area for the final piece of the puzzle - where is he buried ?  Regardless of cause of death, he is entitled to War Grave commemoration . It was the war that ruined his life.

I thought he might be in Halifax. And the coroner didn’t qualify as “of unsound mind” (unless that was added to the death certificate?)  so in a civic cemetery?

A tree online has his burial in Royton Cemetery Section 1E Grave 1524.  It also says he has been "accepted for a CWWG", a war grave, presumably.

You have found the answer!  That is undoubtedly the right man. I will now pursue Oldham Council for the Burial Register.

My thanks to you both -this find is down to you.

I will now pursue Oldham Council for the Burial Register.

But why do you need to?
The burial is actually indexed on FamilySearch.

Quality of downloaded image of register very poor - almost illegible. Oldham will provide.

That's good, Jen.
Hopefully they will be good enough if Oldham won't play ball.
