Good evening folks
Just a short one to start of the new week..LM
-
Thanks.L.M.
Well been sorting out paperwork all day ,need my tax return doing .Anyone would think I am a millionaire!
I pay 25% of my work’s pension in tax,and I had to pay in each month to get a pension.
Well the fire repair man came yesterday ,could not make it Saturday but has done a good job I feel .
I have not lit it myself yet as I still can’t smell!
Son off to head office on Weds, so a pile of ironing tomorrow to do for him,he is so busy with his work I don’t expect him to do it. A good T,V programme and it is a doddle.
Not tested my repaired cooker yet ,but some over ripe bananas will be in a banana loaf tomorrow.
Usually do that in my little cooker but it is slowly dying so a bit unreliable now.
Another wet day but milder.
Hope all are managing to keep warm .
Cheerio.Viktoria.
-
Morning all.
Hope you are still taking it a bit easier Viktoria still early days.
After a really horrible day yesterday the sky is blue and sun out, looks like a nice day, we can but hope.
I went to Bluewater in Kent yesterday, clocked up my steps I must say ! , didn't buy anything but I helped my friend to spend her money, i am good at that, bit of an escapade on the bus, we heard bang and we thought the bus had hit the roundabout, then we heard a siren noise, the driver came to our seat and it was the safety lock on the door that can be opened in an emergency, don't think I would have noticed my friend disappearing through the door if it had opened, might have just been in time to grab her ankle, well, it was a laugh as to be honest I don't think the door would have opened unless pushed, but all was well.
Enjoy your day folks, run down to my bazaar so I have a busy week,
Take care.

Not sure where to put this one.
I am trying to get hold of the Salvation Army Tune Book Volume 1 published 2015. It is already out of print and no sign of being reprinted. SA seem to be providing the tunes separately- at a cost.
I wonder if anyone has a spare copy which I might purchase- all costs defrayed.
I have volume 2 published at the same time and when I ordered them both they sent 2 copies of volume 2!
Help please!!!!!!

A beautiful sunny day but very cold. I spent most of it Christmas shopping in our nearest city, which was full of people, who mainly seemed to have prams. pushchairs, walking frames and sticks and (wait for it, Viktoria) so called invalid carriages. No shortage of cash among them - everyone was loaded with shopping bags. I do hope it's not all "on tick", as it will have to paid for after Christmas. There was hardly any room on the pavements and between the aisles in the shops, so shopping was a nightmare, but I managed to get some stocking fillers and my present from my husband - a pair of boots! I'm afraid I shall have to go again next Monday to do the rest.
What do you buy for 14 year old boys these days? It's just stocking fillers, as he will want some cash to buy whatever interests him this year. It's easy to buy some for my granddaughter, though.
Keep warm and well, folks, and Viktoria, don't overdo your new found freedom. Your arm will tell you if you do. :)
Extra thick chicken and veg soup for supper tonight. We had roast chicken yesterday, so used all the scraps from that and added potatoes, leeks, peas and beans with lots of herbs. I always thicken my soup with lentils, which melt away into the hot liquid and thicken it nicely. Mmm...!
-
MOF that I am, I am so pleased that I don't have a large family, so no real problems for Christmas or birthdays. 8)
Daughter, plus 3 grandchildren who are all late teens, early 20's. So money for each of them :) OH and I don't bother to buy for each other - if there's something we like, then we just buy it at that time. I do have to admit that it is all getting much worse - did we really start Christmas shopping in November in the past? AND I'll wait until next week to decorate my porch and bay window.
Just paid out for my green bin collections for next year, so no worries about clearing the garden of rubbish.
-
All my family are grown up, so like BumbleB they all have money so we are all happy. Only six year old non verbal great granddaughter, her Mum takes her money to buy whatever takes her fancy in the New Year.
Just sharing edibles for everyone else. Postage so expensive and service so bad I’m only sending a few cards by post, local ones will be hand delivered by my helper and granddaughter. Overseas will get E-Cards, cheques to two charities instead.
I’m ahead of you BumbleB, paid for garden bin weeks ago. Like everything else it gets dearer every year. Heaven only knows what else will go up after the Budget tomorrow. ::)
-
Just asking, anyone heard from KGarrard lately
LM
-
Christmas shopping is not for the feint hearted these days, everyone scurrying around as if the shops will be empty all the while dripping with all sorts of things nobody wants! Bar humbug!!
I try to pick up things when I see them. Grandsons past the toy stage into sport and music.
As an extended family we decided some years ago just to give to the children.. one lot in Singapore so it’s money collectively sent.
We don’t go bonkers with ourselves, tend to buy what we need when we want it.. food and the odd tipple always go down well!
It’s become quite a commercial farce and to much junk bought for the sake of it.
Hope everyone is keeping well ..

Jeff, your request might gain a bigger audience if you start a separate thread in Totally off Topic Bit. Good luck!
Caroline, couldn't agree more about it being a commercial farce and unfortunately a lot of people will spend most of 2026 paying for it, or struggling to pay at all. Not the intended spirit of Christmas. :-\
-
Jebber - I only received the message today, so paid up immediately.
And, yes, I too don't send very many cards these days. Gone are the days when I would make upwards of 30 cards, now I just buy a few to send.
-
Roobarb thanks for the suggestion. Will try that .
Regarding cards I have cut down considerably on posting- just those without an e-mail address. We started sending an annual update sheet at Christmas- the ubiquitous Round Robin when we moved here from Bradford on Avon and I still do that to all on the list whether with Postman Pat or by e-mail. Any savings on postage will be donated to Alzheimers Society. Cards I buy from Cystic Fibrosis Charity.

Just asking, anyone heard from KGarrard lately
LM
Looking at his profile, he hasn't been on-line since the end of September.
-
No, he hasn't, just hope he is OK
Someone else pointed it out to me as well
LM
-
For years I have only bought charity cards, I always bought direct from the charities so all the money went directly to them, not the small percentage that they received via the charity cards sold in shops. I wonder how they will be affected by the reduction of cards being sent now.
I can't get to the shops so don't know if they are still selling cards and wrapping with glitter on, I received quite a few last year, they can't be recycled so end up in landfill, I try to think ahead and only buy products in packaging that can be recycled.
It was good to hear in the news yesterday that someone has been arrested over the dreadful fly tipping near Oxford. I hope they get everyone involved and throw the book at them, both financially and imprisoning them.
-
No, he hasn't, just hope he is OK
Someone else pointed it out to me as well

Hi I recall KGarrad said he was due for an op at the beginning of October. Perhaps someone who "knows" him better should ask him via PM ? Sorry if I appear to be meddling with your board!
Rebel
-
CR, I have messaged him, no reply.
You certainly aren't meddling, someone else mentioned it to me as well, he is missed, hope all is well with him..
LM
-
Jebber - There still seem to be plenty of cards and paper sold in the shops…
I make my own, deliver by hand locally and donate money to a couple of local charities.
I use a charity site to send e-cards for abroad and further afield in UK giving them a donation.
The cost of postage is making it almost prohibitive .. it’s a pity the PO didn’t lower the cost for Christmas cards as they used to do in the good old days.
I now don’t use wrapping paper for the family I make fabric wrappers with ribbons attached and they give them back to me for reuse…
so no big black bag in the living room to fill with huge amounts of ripped up paper!
I saw these for sale at Country Living Christmas fair one year and thought that’s a good idea!
The first frosty morning … looks lovely but don’t think my washings going to dry 😂..
Well it’s our biannual Christmas Fayre on Saturday of next week so it’s been a busy few weeks making goods.. think my sewing machine is looking forward to a service and a good rest!
I’m hoping to hand the reins over to one of our younger ladies… it’s certainly been more difficult to find stall holders this time round…
certainly finding shops/ organisations to donate raffle prizes even more difficult as they’re all pulling their belts in. We’re once again raising money for our counties Young carers who are always in need of funds.
Hope everyone is keeping well and gearing up for the festivities!
LM hope your bazaar goes well and you get lots of people attending to boost your coffers.
Viktoria- I’m sure you’re beavering around and hopefully feeling like a new woman with your pacemaker in place.
Take care all

Would purchasing via USA be a possibility for you:
https://shop.salvationarmy.org/The-Salvation-Army-Tune-Book
they indicate 7 copies available for Volume 1 2015, at $40 before postage costs.

Thank you. Will have a look at that. rj

I'd been thinking you might do well contacting your nearest branch of Salvation Army, radstockjeff. It'll be easily found online.
Re KGarrad - I'd been wondering, too, if all is well with him. Hope it is.

Christmas cards, I generally buy them after Christmas from the charity shop, on checking my address book I have crossed out so many over the years, down to about 40 I think, next week there is a family get together whereby we usually exchange cards, I just hope between now and Tuesday I have time to write the cards, my priority at the moment is ticketing my bazaar items, oh yes, how many chocolates in the jar?, counted and ready to seal, I just had to eat one, testing of course.
Very heavy frost on the car this morning, very cold when I walked back from the shops.

Hope you succeed Jeff .
Not even made my cake, ,pudding or mincemeat yet.
Son at Head Office until next Thursday probably ,so a good time to get in with cake, pudding or mincemeat, although I am thinking a very nice trifle or Boodle’s orange fool would be refreshingly light after the big roast dinner instead of Christmas pudding.
Hope you succeed Jeff.a long shot but I wonder if The S.A. In Mitchell St. Ancoats ,Manchester, The Star Hall , would have a copy ,my niece and nephew played in the band.
Google it .
My husband’s Birthday today, would have been 94, got some flowers next to his photograph taken at our Golden Wedding .
We nearly got to our Diamond - 2016:
Cool, and the sun has gone in.
Son’s mattress protector and pillow protector in washer ,on low temperature, ,then sheets and mattress cover ,pillow slips ,sheets, duvet cover in .
Thank goodness for washing machines!
Got tickets for our church Band Concert next Sunday , as usual it is Whitworth Vale and Healey Band.
Eldest son too so a lift as son who is here is at Office but would take me otherwise.
Hope those unwell are feeling better , so many “thankyous” to you all for your kind messages..They do buck me up.
Well I get my power now from Utilities Warehouse ,grand daughter in law works for them .
In the package there was a deal with SIM card, I pay that but it is for Flash Harry and Kyra , so grandson puts the cost of the card in to a little account .
It makes £156 a year so divided by two = £78 each ,ample for a B/ day and Christmas present each,no postage for me to pay and some holiday spends for them.
They are in to banking and like to save ,well F,H does - Kyra is a bit young as yet .
Must do the same for Lily - and - who will have a baby brother next year,!
Charlie!
Well you are delaying me—— again!
Seriously , good to read your news and daily lives.
Cheerio folks.
Viktoria.

When my daughter was young we taught her to spend half and save half of any monies she was given, there was a post office account for children in those days, it had a spider motif, why spiders? , I hate them, anyway, think his name was Mervin, it took me a long time to convince her that the post master was making her money grow, she thanked me only recently because it grew and when she left home she had a tidy sum, but she didn't mention it till recently, think I was a wicked mother at the time.
Viktoria, I really don't know how you pack so much into a day, I am not lazy but goodness me you do so much.
Chilly but a lovely crisp day.
Once you are on a fund raising committee you never get off, I have been involved since 1966 and only one way off but I am not ready for that.

There's always a lot of talk about rising prices, some of which I'm more aware of than others. For instance, I have no idea how much petrol is as regardless of the price I have to buy it anyway (although I've been told recently that the price has actually gone down!).
I have my groceries delivered because I hate supermarket shopping and find home delivery so much more convenient, but seeing the total price of my order when checking it out has really brought it home to me how much grocery prices have increased. I have a delivery about once every ten days, there's only me to feed but I'm finding the total bill quite shocking.
I hate the tricks that supermarkets play to try and fool us, shrinkflation has been with us for a while but they're also employing what I consider to be underhand methods of increasing prices. For example, they withdraw an own brand product from sale and after I've spent a few weeks trying to find a suitable replacement they bring it back in different packaging but with a smaller quantity or a higher price. Or both.
I don't usually dwell on things like this, I just try to fight them at their own battle but I've become very aware of it recently.
It doesn't look like the chancellor is doing anything to encourage cash savings accounts by changing the ISA limit for under 65s. I think she's deluding herself that it'll encourage people to use their money for investments, I think it takes a certain sort of person to do that. I might be proved wrong, it has been known on the odd occasion! ;D

I agree Roobarb, I've just put an order in for delivery for me only. £94
I will need another to be delivered in 10 days time from tomorrow, or have hunger pangs and go hungry.
I am just maintaining my weight.
My Daughter collected £50 worth from Aldi on the 22nd to replace what I had used (that I always get from Aldi).
All very well the Consultant saying cook from fresh!
When they fitted this Smart Meter the chap set the weekly figure and I'm in the Red after a day and half to keep it at 21 deg C in the day!
It is the fresh meat, fresh fish and fresh fruits that really hammers up the price.
There will be none wasted either.

-
I too get a delivery ,but Tesco charge for delivery if it is under I think £60 .
They also seem to send short dated stuff ,example a loaf of fresh bread delivered the evening it was outdated!
There is also a packing charge.
I am also fed up with best before dates, I know food is produced very differently to how it was years ago but so much is thrown away that you suspect could really still be O.K.
Viktoria.
-
I never buy fresh on a home delivery but still cost me well over £100 a couple of weeks ago, if I can I want to look at fresh food myself but it isn't easy if one is housebound.
Things seem to have doubled in price, to go on for 1 item I nearly always come out spending over £40 or so, still, no pockets in shrouds.
LM
-
Viktoria, you have to spend £50 to avoid delivery charges, it went up from £40 and it wouldn't surprise me if it increases again. Not sure what you mean by a packing charge, if you Google it it specifically states that Tesco doesn't charge for packing.
I rarely receive anything from them that's short dated and can't recall ever receiving anything out of date. I wonder if it's to do with your delivery time, I suppose if it's late then by the time it's picked a lot of the supplies will have been sold in the shop. If you receive anything out of date or short dated the driver will refund you for it (and often let you keep it too). If you don't notice till they've gone then ring Tesco and they will refund it. I know sometimes that can be a nuisance but they need to be aware if it's happening regularly or they can't do anything about the problem.
-
Hello Viktoria
Sending a loaf of bread to a household of one with that day's date on, is pretty awful!
Bread does not last and often needs to be in the freezer the day before the BBE date (provided it has been kept out of the sun).
Delivered bread needs 3 - 4 days BBE on it.
I'd telephone and mention the date and that you would like a refund, but it is getting round to it and sometimes phoning can be made difficult ...
I rang Lincs County Council a voice operated system and everytime I said the answer, it couldn't work out what I had said.
The Telephonist answered in the end, no I cannot put you through, you have to tell me and I write it into an email as you speak and send it now. The poor woman sounded like she was being asked to do a lot.
I said my query and thank you, but next time I will email the Department direct.
Anyway, I didn't quite get the answer to all the parts of the question and I still needed to email, to clarify how much.
--------------------
I heard this said about a serious condition that cannot be diagnosed by 'phone.
Can GPs diagnose this over the phone? If not, we have no hope.
The other answered ...
No, but the Receptionist can.

I quite agree Roobarb I’ve noticed that prices have increased substantially over the past months.
I too have a Tesco delivery about every 10 days and they’re very good about informing you if it’s a short date, or refunding if you send the item back..
you don’t even have to phone them now as they’re on WhatsApp!
I do go to Lidl’s and the local greengrocers as I like to choose my own veg and buy certain bits from Lidl’s as they’re cheaper than Tesco.
I don’t know how some folk manage with these increases and those with families it must be very hard..
Well at least The Chancellor has allowed us over 65’s to use our money to go into ISA’s rather than speculate on the stock market…
who in their right minds thinks pensioners want to risk their hard earned money… or anyone else for that matter! Unless of course you’ve got plenty to splash about and risk!!
The idea that we’ll be paying tax on our state pensions when we’ve paid it in the first place is incredulous…
We’ll stay calm everyone and at least we have past good times to remember… I worry for the younger generations..

Many thanks for the Happy Lancashire Day message. :) (It's not my birthday till April - please don't make me any older than I feel.)
I'm so far away from Lancashire these days and haven't been back for over a year and then only passing through to visit relatives on the Scottish border. But I'm still a Lassie from Lancashire at heart and can put on a gradely accent when required, which is rather better than the Australian accent of Florrie Ford here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49RpWwH1Ha4 Sorry, that was the only recording I could find. :'( Surely Gracie Fields, aka Our Gracie, recorded it?

In the inimitable words of “ Are You Being Served?”
“I’m here!”
——-NO- it is “ I’m free,”
Thanks, I have been having a right old sort out ,getting stuff ready for the lady who does my tax return, it is a bit complicated with the Belgian one being included so that supplements my British one , which is lower because of 12 years in Belgium.
Each month the rate of exchange is different so calculations and a form in Flemish to be completed .
My son could do the English one but I don’t like to bother him, he has enough to do with the Flemish one.
I wonder sometimes about people who have not contributed to our system - they must get a pittance when they come here ,at least there was an agreement between Belgium and Britain that each would pay pensions for any years spent in their countries, but must have been in employment and paid the N,I, contributions in the country they were domiciled in.I was not allowed to work ,so the pension is from my husband’s contributions.
It is reams of paperwork but does make up the shortfall in my British pension.
Lots of blank sheets of paper, well one side for Flash Harry and Kyra to use next visit .
I used to do someting pretty at school with the reception class.
Fold a piece of paper in half ,short side to short side ,open and paint with wallpaper adhesive all over .
Splash paint blobs randomly on one half only on the wet paste.
Fold over so both sides match and rub your hands over to spread the paint .
Then open and both sides are exactly the same ,all blurred.
Leave to dry and then re- fold and cut out a half butterfly shape ., from thr folded edge.
When opened colour in the body and head, attach a pipe cleaner to the head part if you want .
The effect is lovely .
Each butterfly is different but both wings exactly the same.
%We had them all along the corridor .
The first collage I did at that school was a jungle theme ,for in the cloakroom, with no regard to geographical locations we had tigers and lions ,leopards ,elephants- well heads coming out of foliage ,rhinoceroses etc .
One child was really timid and would not go into the cloakroom so we made a special lion ,well he did and added it with a label saying he had made that one all by himself .
It looked somewhat like a constipated kitten -but-he had made it and then was brave enough to run the gauntlet of all the other man eaters.
They were peeping out of foliage ,and the cloakroom was a bit dark so perhaps it was understandable,He was only four, aaaaaw.
Well must get on.
Hope all are alright ,are able to keep warm and active .
Look after yourselves, we are a special generation.
Cheerio.Viktoria.

Well done L.M, it is tiring though.
Well Band Concert tomorrow.
It is lovely and the height of our huge church is very suitable , it is packed, sadly very rare these days .

Yesterday was definitely a cake day here! I've said before that nothing happens in our village without cake, but yesterday was a bit over the top.
A charity coffee morning started the day off with luscious cakes of all kinds. People took home extra slices to eat later in the day and there were books for sale, old and new. I bought two paperbacks. I couldn't resist them and when I have read them they will go on to a charity shop.
In the afternoon there was a memorial service for a friend's husband, who died recently. This was followed by "light refreshments" in the local pub. This meant sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam and, of course, more cake.
In the evening we went to an informal concert given by our choir director and her partner, who sing modern folk music. In the interval there were hot drinks and, you've guessed it, more home made cake.
We usually weigh ourselves every Sunday morning and I stepped on the scales fearing the worst, but was amazed to find that I had actually lost about one pound since last week. How did that happen? I'm trying to lose a bit of weight before Christmas, in anticipation of some rather hefty food and lots of chocolates. I do wish I didn't have a sweet tooth!
-
What a busy cakeiferish day L.M.
You mention that I am often busy but you seem to be always busy!
As are many RootsChatters.
Sunny here but cold.
Son is down at Head Office, so I’m getting on with things without tea
making .,
he is in a warm room ,warmth from the computers and so is thirsty .I did think of setting up a kettle etc in his room but he’d forget especially when in a four way international” conference”.
Well daughter and son in law are seriously considering retiring ,a huge new outlet to be opened not far away ,quite a few smaller ones have already gone under so theirs has been very busy on services and repairs but life is being made difficult and when the big one opens it will be worse .
They can go of their own volition with their reputation intact and heads held high .She is 58, son in law about 63.
He us a highly qualified riding instructor and will be snapped up, she is a qualified accountant ,has no time really for being a riding instructress but
is qualified ,58 is a bit old to go back to a strenuous job all day every day although she does have her own horse and looks after it herself.
Hey ho! Looks like all change so not making any plans for Christmas .
Well must get on folks . Cheerio .
Thanks for your news .
Viktoria.
-
Roobarb, your earlier comments on shrinkflation are so accurate. The worst aspect of this came when I was out buying the ingredients for the Christmas cake. For many many years we've always used the same recipe, which requires one kilogram of pre-soaked mixed fruit. The one kilogram bags have been changed to 800 gram bags, so it has meant that I had to buy two of these, to meet the recipe. I'm now left with 600 grams of brandy soaked fruit, which we will be enjoying with yogurt as a dessert for the next week or two. I wish they would not fiddle about with the sizes.
Zaph
-
Oooh!, like the idea of your yogurt desert, everything seems to have shrunk, sadly not a lot we can do about it .
My back , feet and legs ache so much after spending hours on my feet yesterday, we have doubled the amount we took last year, I said to the treasurer, " I hope you sounds it wisely " he is a dry sent of humour man, never know what he is thinking.
Take care everyone, keep warm.
LM
-
Well done L.M.
Well at the Band Concert this afternoon ,really good
I took some things for the Raffle, guess what - I won one of the prizes I took ::)
Gave it back to be drawn again.
So nice to be back and a lovely welcome .
Eldest son came with me ,t’other not back ‘till Wednesday earliest.
Wet and cold here all day.
A nice evening with T.V .
Not got a T.V. Mag,so have to look on here .Antiques Roadshow later,I love that programme.
Especially Militaria, such stories of bravery and fortitude,
Keep well folks and thanks for your news .
Viktoria.
-
I do like the expert on Militaria on Antiques Roadshow, who gets quite emotional about the medals and the stories behind the items brought in. Then there's the chap who specialises in weapons...
Further to my cake-eating day on Saturday (#50) We were invited out for supper with a friend in a neighbouring village the following day. After a rather unusual meal the dessert was brought out - cake again, this time Panettone. "It's mostly air" our hostess said. I hope she was right.
A dull damp day today, with the forecast of rain, at times heavy, all day. :(
-
The weapons specialist rather looks like Buffalo Bill aka William Cody , and Wild Bill Hickock !
Big moustache - longish hair etc. Might be Robert Tilney
But such knowledge .
Viktoria.
