Title: Pryke family
Post by: Keziah2 on Sunday 16 November 25 16:48 GMT (UK)
Help please I’m going round in circles!

I have Charles S Pryke (transcribed as Charles T on some sites) born c1885 in Paddington.  He had 3 children the eldest being Ellen H born c1908. Wife Sophia b Lewisham.

I think I have him in 1901 living with his widowed mother Ellen Pryke age 42 in Willesden- the ages all seem to tie in.  I have Ellen in 1921 born c1855 living with son John age 28  c1893 in Willesden but I can’t find any of them in 1911.

Can anyone help me track down the family in 1911 please & if you can find a marriage of a Charles Pryke to a Sophia that would be a huge bonus.

Thank you in advance. 🤞the super sleuths on here can help.

From the GRO, You can find the birth certificate for Samuel Charles PRYKE 1885 Paddington.
No mother on index, so infers that he was illegitimate

In 1911, the family is in Willesden, but under the surname BROWN

Thank you Neale 1961 - by a process of elimination I’d sort of come to conclusion that she may have been Sophia Faulkner that married Samuel Charles Brown in 1907 Hendon Rd but linking that  to Charles S Pryke was proving difficult?  What was your source please?

Ellen Pryke born 25 Sept 1908 has her birth registered under the surname PRYKE, but her baptism is under the surname BROWN

the marriage register of St Michael & All Angels, Stonebridge originally had the name Brown for Samuel Charles. It was changed to Pryke 19 Sept 1920 in the presence of S C Pryke and S Pryke formerly S Faulkner. Marriage was 25 Dec 1907.

there's a workhouse admission Edgware 19 July 1895 for
Ellen Pryke b. 1861
Ellen  b. 1884
Charles b. 1885
Joseph b. 1889
Benjamin b. 1891
John b. 1893
noted as destitute.
Perhaps that's when Mr Brown left the picture.   :-\

I spotted that in my search & saved it just in case - did I ever think helping a friend find her roots would get this complicated😂🤣

Sound like Mr Brown the builder was a tad unreliable.

Thank you Osprey it’s all starting to fall into place.

Don't think he was playing Happy Families! Wonder if he was married to someone else so couldn't marry Ellen?

found them in 1891. Census does show Braw, but I'm not finding other results for Samuel Braw...

Wow - thank you.  It’s definitely them Ellen’s pob is Oxford on the 1891 original. The old style handwriting is just a bit curly but I’m confident it is Brown not Braw.

That was a good find  Osprey, but I have not been able to progress things any further with Mr. Brown the builder/ joiner, after quite some time looking. It does say BRAW on the 1891 census, but all the following records say BROWN.
I cannot find either Ellen or Samuel in 1881.
If all those 5 children were fathered by Samuel Brown, then he and Ellen were together a fairly long while.
Maybe the addresses on the birth certificates for the children will help to pin point Ellen's movements.
They were in Willesden in 1891 and then by 1895 Ellen and children are in Hendon workhouse.
So did Samuel Brown die between 1891 and 1895? - somewhere in the Willesden / Hendon area?

More research into Helen Pryke bot 1856 Middleton Stoney as suggested by Neale1961 needed but I’m off out today.  Thank you all for your help.

Couldn’t  wait so over a coffee break 😂

1861. David 33  & Caroline Pryke 30 both born in Suffolk with 6 children born Caulcott, Oxfordshire.  One is an Ellen Pryke age 5. All living in Finsbury.  By 1871 they are on Isle of Wight but no Ellen?

1871 Ellen Pryke in service in Brading, Hampshire age 15 born Oxford.

1881 census for Ellen, possibly.

It does says Pryke on the census, but is mis-transcribed as Pryce.

It looks as if she had a very good position working for a retired Rear Admiral.
I wonder where and when she met "Mr Brown" because 3 years later she had the child Ellen born in London.

Thanks Neal 1961

Yes I had a poke around yesterday evening & came up with some of that - so good you have found same.

I spent quite a bit of time looking for Mr Brown - trouble is there’s lots of them in London.  I did find one that was a joiner born in Great Witchingham, wife Ann.  He was b c1831 & was in London & I looked to see if they had a son Samuel or Charles but no luck.  Anyway he would have been a bit too old & off spring probably not old enough.  Have come to conclusion that it’s going to be very difficult to track Mr Brown down.

Charles samuel Brown age 7 in 1851 with parents James & Mary Ann living in Bloomsbury?  Fits the bill age wise but…. One for later.

Think that was one I had a look at earlier. He was born Holborn & is a printer in later census entries.
