Hi, Everyone,
I’m at the moment struggling to discover a possible marriage between a Walter ROBINSON and a Beatrice SNAITH.
There are a couple of births, of a John Malcolm ROBINSON in 1926 in the Richmond reg district and then of a George Keith ROBINSON in 1927 which both have the mother’s maiden name recorded as SNAITH.
All four individuals are living together in the same household in Richmond in the electoral rolls from at least 1949.
And there’s a death record in 1973 for a Beatrice ROBINSON in Richmond that gives a birth date of 24th June 1894.
Might there have been a mistranscription in the records somewhere, or even the possibility that Beatrice had been previously married and that her maiden name had been recorded on the marriage certificate rather than her present one on her wedding day?
Many thanks to anyone who can unearth this marriage for me…
Keith

Can't see the marriage, but the 1939 Register shows the family, including one blacked out entry (younger son :-\), as living at 45 Frenchgate, Richmond.

Bumblebee,
Thanks so much for your swift response…
And I see that with the exact birthdates given on there that I can clearly identify Walter’s birth registration on the GRO, though the only possible fit for Beatrice would be an Elizabeth Beatrice, (I had a further look elsewhere) SNAITH born in the Stockton reg district in Sept 1893 q. More precisely an individual who lived in the village of Lanchester, not many miles from Durham…

This is the only Beatrice birth I can find on GRO 1888-1897, so is the dob on free bmd death correct?

Colin,
Thanks very much for spending all that time researching this family conundrum for me. That the theory might in fact be that Walter ROBINSON could have been marrying a widowed Beatrice BUTTERWORTH some time between 1917 or 1923 and before 1926?
The only problem is that the precise date of birth of 24th June 1893 that Beatrice is given at her death in 1973 is also recorded on that 1939 Electoral Register. Which presumably she or her husband were able to provide to the enumerator who came knocking…

The two Herbert deaths mentioned are both on the 1921 census and no Beatrice present. So that marriage seems unlikely. Elizabeth B is also on the 1921 census.

Yes, that’s the individual I have my beady eye on, with no other alternative in sight at the moment!
Lanchester only 40 miles or so away from Richmond…
At least SNAITH is not too common a name, (nor Beatrice as a forename, I suppose) though I did wonder whether there might have been a colossal mistranscription somewhere along the line, with SNAITH become the much more common SMITH. The n and the a fusing into an m with someone’s handwritten script.

I'm sure you are aware that Snaith is a market town in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
The 1921 census is on FindMyPast & Ancestry, she is with her parents & siblings.

SMITH, BEATRICE
Mother's maiden surname: WILSON
GRO Reference: 1892 S Quarter in HARTLEPOOL Volume 10A Page 146
The FreeBMD page scan has the surname as SNAITH.
She was baptised 21 Aug 1892, parents Henry and Margaret.
They are in West Hartlepool in 1901 and there are possible deaths for both parents before 1911.

I too have been looking at that Beatrice, Debra.
In 1911, she is living in west Auckland with her aunt and uncle, George and Eliza Snaith - transcribed as Smith on one site.

A bit of an update for all you kind Rootschatters who have been trying to solve this mystery/brick wall for me…
I notice that there is in fact a Jan 1931 marriage in Lanchester for an Elizabeth Beatrice SNAITH to an Ernest BURTON. Which rather puts an end to the idea that this woman became the wife of Walter ROBINSON in the Richmond area.
As well as this I’ve this morning received the 8th Sept 1927 birth certificate of George Keith ROBINSON that gives his mother’s name as Beatrice Muriel ROBINSON formerly SNAITH.
Sending us along another trail…
Keith
…and I’ve had another look - the 1939 Electoral Roll gives Beatrice’s birthdate as 24th June 1893, whereas the GRO death index gives it as 24th June 1894. More confusion…

Dundee,
I greatly fear that I have rather ignored your considered post earlier on this thread, busily chasing my own tail and coming face to face with nothing but dead ends. I’ve looked back at that 1939 Electoral Roll entry and see that Beatrice gives her birth date as June 24th 1893, whereas the GRO death entry in 1973 it is a 24th June 1894 entry.
Very recent input from a family memory suggests strongly that the West Hartlepool location could well be where Beatrice started life. Entirely possible then, if with that August 1892 baptism, Beatrice could well have come into the world on the 24th June - but in 1892. Perhaps need to send away for that birth cert now.
With confusion in later years about the exact year of her birth, but day and month somehow clearly marked and remembered…
