Charles Abrey came to Consett from the Mildenhall area of Suffolk in the mid 1800s. He was an agricultural worker and became a publican at the Imperial Hotel, Consett, at least between 1887-1891 although he still took on agricultural work to supplement his income.
He died in Lanchester in the first quarter of 1913, aged 81, but was this at a private residence or the Workhouse at Lee Hill Hospital? He was supposedly buried at Lanchester but I cannot find a reference to his burial at All Saints or the civil cemetery. Does anyone know where he was actually buried? Many thanks.

If you want to know the address he died at you can download a digital copy of his death cert for £3

On the 1911 census he is in the Workhouse in Lanchester as Charles ABRAY.

Hi Neville,
When you say that he died in Lanchester, so you mean you know that he died in Lanchester itself or that his death registration was in Lanchester District? If the latter, this covered a fairly wide area.

What burial records have you looked at? I can’t see that the All Saints or the Cemetery Records for 1913 are available online (but am happy to be corrected). Have you checked them at the Record Office?

There is a tree on Ancestry - have you seen it? It says he was b 1824 & died 1913 aged 89. Death reg has him as 81
If he is the 1911 entry - he was b 1832?

JenB,
I don't know. The only place I could find his death was on FreeBMD and it simply said Lanchester. I assumed he had moved there and died in the Workhouse as there was no other obvious and sensible reason for him to have died there. I could not find a burial record for him even though I knew he died in the first quarter of 1913.

CaroleW and Comberton
CaroleW: That was probably the best answer but Comberton's response has made it unnecessary. Thanks to both of you

johnwarrn,
He seems to have been a bit of a nomad! But your information is very useful. Thank you.

I could find nothing elsewhere, so I tried Findagrave. Nothing showed up there but that's not surprising. I can't see the Workhouse authorities paying for him to be transported out of the village and buried elsewhere so I am pretty sure he will have a pauper's grave in one of the two graveyards in Lanchester. I will try to check on my next visit to the County Records Office.

CaroleW,
He is the man mentioned in the 1911 Census and he was born in 1832 and died in 1913 aged 81 and, as Comberton pointed out, many references to him use the misspelling of ABRAY.
