Jane Johnston, nee McClure died Jan 23, 1901 in Clinton, Massachusetts. She was the second wife of John Johnston who was born abt 1831 in Ireland and they were on the 1880 census for Clinton, Massachusetts, the last time that I saw them. John's first wife was Margaret Jane Moffat. I would like to know the date of death for John Johnston who died before Jane but I haven't been able to find it. Perhaps an obit for Jane would reveal John's date of death. Thanks for any help. Peggy

regarding Jane Johnston, nee McClure died Jan 23, 1901
did her death record have a street address included for her place of death? if so, you can search by street at this link. if it is not the exact correct link, then look on his main page.
https://stevemorse.org/census/reelframes.html
I think this is the one, now that I look at it

edit to add:
I realized I could have found it in less time than it took to ask.
No, it doesn't have a street address.

You have found him, oldohiohome! Funny, I searched for him, with a date of death of 1890, +/- 10 years, and nothing came up. If I am right, he is a brother to the Whaley who died back in Ireland in 1879 with wife Jane, nee Henry, who died in 1930. Thank you very much. Peggy

On John's death certificate, can anyone help with the place of birth of Jane, his mother? Looks like Penneybox?

The guy dittoed "Ireland and Pennsylvania" from the line two lines above John. He probably only meant to ditto Ireland. I doubt if 5 people in a row had fathers from Ireland and mothers from Pennsylvania.
There are some entries with only 1 place of birth for both parents. I'd assume that both were born in the same place. So acc. to the record John's mother is either born in Ireland, or the place was not known. I'd guess it says she was born in Ireland. You could page back and forth a few pages and see if any are explicitly marked as not known. If so, that would strengthen the case for her being born in Ireland.
Besides if John was born in Ireland, there is almost no way his mother was born in Pennsylvania.

I think you’re right. Both born Ireland. Too bad her last name is missing.

On the 1870 census, when John Johnston/Johnson is married to Margaret Jane Moffatt, he has 5 children - Whaley J. age 13, George age 11, Elizabeth age 9, John, and Thomas James.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01u30/
Of these children, I know that Whaley J., age 13 in 1870, died Jan 20, 1898 in Clinton, still single.
John Johnston died 26 Mar 1887 in Clinton, I believe still single.
Thomas James born 1869 in Clinton died 12 Mar 1899 in Clinton, married to Elizabeth Linton in 1892.
I wonder what happened to George. He is not on the 1880 census with remarried father John to Jane McClure but he would be age 21 by then so could be living separately. But I suspect that he died between 1870 and 1880 in Clinton. Can anyone help with George? Peggy

Deaths reg in Clinton for 1893
Feb 3
George Johnston, age 33, of pneumonia, in Clinton, occupation: operative [probably ran a machine in a mill], born in Ireland, son of John [,] and Margaret Moffatt
ancestry transcribed Moffatt as Fuoffet on the index. familysearch got it right.
both ancestry and familysearch assumed John's name was Moffatt. but if a male died, or a female who was still single died, they just listed the father's first name, followed by the mother's full maiden name. look at others on the page.

Wow, you are fantastic. That is indeed George, also single. The only one who married was Thomas James Johnston who died in 1899.
That leaves Elizabeth age 9 in 1870 who was on the 1880 census, age 18, with John and his second wife Jane McClure whom he married in 1873. Did she marry? Her parents were John Johnston and Margaret Jane Moffat/t.
Thanks for your help.Peggy

This is probably her. I don't have time now to trace her forward, but this should get you started.
14 June 1892, Clinton
Elizabeth Johnston, of Clinton, 29, a weaver, born in Clinton, parents: John [Johnston] and Elizabeth Moffett,
William Connor, of Boston, 29, an iron worker, born in Ireland, parents: James [Connor] and Margaret Ross
first marriage for both, married by Thomas L Fisher, clergyman, Clinton

The Conner/Castle/Knoud Family tree at ancestry says her mother is "Margaret/Elizabeth J. Moffatt" born 1835, Tyrone. 3 children: Elizabeth, John, and Thomas James. They think she died in Moneymore, Derry.
They have her on the 1900 through 1940 censuses in Medford. You should be able to find them at familysearch. They don't know when she died. They say her husband died in 1939. She is a widow in 1940.

Was he Catholic and was she Protestant?
obituaries would be useful here.

The tree doesn't have a source for William's death, but
MA death index
William Connor, Medford, Volume 58, page 365
he is alive in 1930.
-----
Even if he was Catholic, that might not be him in New Calvary, Mattapan. Malden Holy Cross is a lot,lot closer to Medford and I know they were still burying people there in the 1940's.

Hello oldohiohome, you have been doing a lot of work regarding Elizabeth’s marriage. At first, I thought it was not her for 3 reasons- wrong age by 2 years, wrong first name for her mother, and wrong place of birth for her- she was born in Ireland, not Clinton. But I am now thinking it is her. Her mother died in 1872 in Clinton when Elizabeth was only 11, so by 1892, perhaps Elizabeth was confused about her mother’s first name.
Elizabeth’s family emigrated about 1868 when Elizabeth was only about 7 so she may have felt she was born in Clinton.
You are correct that an obituary for her death on Nov 7, 1943 would be very helpful.
Thanks for your help. Peggy
-
perhaps Elizabeth was confused about her mother’s first name.
or perhaps the groom provided the information.
-
I never thought of that.
The other obit that would be very helpful would be the one for Elizabeth’s stepmother Jane who started this thread- died Jan 23, 1901. By 1901, Elizabeth was the only stepchild still living but Jane had two biological children, William McClure Johnston and Margaret Jane still living, although William died Mar 7, 1901 in Sterling, Massachusetts, where his great uncle George Johnston died July 27, 1890.

I am now convinced that it is Elizabeth M. Johnston, daughter of John Johnston and Margaret Jane Moffat who died Nov 7, 1943. Her son Thomas Johnston Conner/Connor died Aug 1, 1977 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her twin infants Clarence Ross Conner and Gladys May Conner were born May 12, 1900 and both died in Aug 1900 in Medford, Massachusetts. If only an obit were found to confirm this information.
Trees that I found for her husband William Raymond Conner say born Ireland but most censuses say that he was born in Concord, Massachusetts. Much like Elizabeth saying she was born in Clinton.
William Raymond Conner/Connor died Mar 1939.
Thanks for any help. Peggy
