Title: Will of Thomas Giddings (1780) Tydd St Mary: advice on AI help to transcribe it.
Post by: Nigel Porter on Thursday 06 November 25 11:34 GMT (UK)
Hello,  I have had the will of Thomas Giddings (1719 - 1780) who died in Tydd St Mary and have belatedly started to transcribe it.  However it is proving difficult to read, so does anyone know if there is a free AI system that is any good to help the transcription?  It's a long will at 2 1/2 pages and looks interesting, but despite being very neatly written I'm struggling with several words.

It's on ancestry, what are you having trouble with?

He gives vivid descriptions of just where his land and holdings are.

Son William
Daughters, Ann Giddings, Sarah Giddings and Jane Porter

Hello Amondg,  Thanks for the reply and I have a printed copy of the will that I got ages ago from Lincs Archives and also have it attached to Thomas on my Ancestry site, but for a variety of reasons I've not tried to transcribe it and now I've retired I thought I'd have a go.  However at first glance it looks daunting and if the advances in AI would make it easier I thought I'd give that a go, hence the question.  He also had another daughter, Mary, but she died aged 6 in 1783.

As you know about the contents have you transcribed it yourself, or have you just managed to read it easier than me?

When I found it on ancestry I read it, there are some words that may need some thought.

Hopefully someone will give you hints re AI

I know of no AI software that will read this reliably. But there are plenty of people here on RootsChat who will be able to help you.

Start a new thread on the Handwriting board - https://www.rootschat.com/forum/handwriting-deciphering-recognition.

Post snippets of the image where you need help (including a few extra lines of text above and below), together with your own transcription, however incomplete it may be, and people will help you fill the gaps.

Ancestry have an AI system in beta that has managed some astonishing transcriptions when I have tried it. But it seems not available for this. Licensing or something I presume

Hi David,  I am trying the Ancestry Beta transcription, but it does not work consistently.  I got an initial result that was good, but lost it before I could transfer it to a document and since then it either does not work, or I get a strange result with lots of references to Kent!  I'll keep trying.

Below is what Transkribus does with the first section of Thomas Giddings' will of 1780. The platform doesn't yet have a reliable English model for PCC wills of this date. That is why I posted as I did in reply #4.

A*'s attempt on the first page, I am quite impressed by it. There are obvious flaws, but ... It's a good start for manual transciption.

You beat me to it, that’s pretty amazing, I might spring some of my hard earned cash on that. I have lots of typescripts that traditional ocr does a pretty poor job on. So if it can transcribe that ….

I got the Ancestry function to work briefly and it transcribed the first page and apart from reading Giddings as Gulliver, it looks quite good.  Just trying to get the other 2 pages done, but it does not seem to work very often.
