Hi all, not sure how well you will be able to help me as I have minimal information and some concerns living people which I have been asked to withhold for public forums.
I am looking for a man, the name was given to me verbally - exact spelling is unknown, by the name of "Joe Britton". May be Britain, Brittan, Briton, et cetera. He was a male nurse at a psychiatric hospital: this may have been St. Nicholas Hospital in Gosforth, or Shotley Bridge Hospital in Durham.
He first crosses paths with the family, on whose behalf I am writing this message for, in 1944. He is married and they may have had a child born in 1944. He resided in Gosforth and died at some point between 1976 and 1995. His obituary was in a newspaper, but the family cannot remember specifics.
This is, unfortunately, all of the information we have been able to collect. We have written to the hospitals but received no response and will try again - will also try DNA but would like to exhaust other avenues first.
Best wishes,
AJH

Shotley Bridge Hospital in Durham is not a psychiatric hospital.

Welcome to Roots Chat.
Could this be the death of Joe?

If his obituary was in a newspaper as the family recall then you can search for it using his name.

Weird, just tried FindMyPast search again with no result for Britton for 6th April. Manually searched deaths in EC for the 6th April and there it is nice and clear.

Always needs checking out. A tree on Ancestry suggests Joseph Britton had a relationship with an Agnes Gordon Heath. A male son born (no Details). No evidence of Britton/ Heath marriage. Agnes died 2005 as Heath.

I gave up trying to find any logic in the newspaper site years ago. As you say on FindMyPast its about as clear as it ever gets so 'should' have been relatively easy for the OCR to read.

If the 1955 marriage is correct - Elizabeth was previously married as there are 4 births between 1956 & 1962 with a different mmn than Cooper
Elizabeth Brown married Douglas Cooper in 1947. Douglas only appears to have died in 1995
Given that Joseph Britton was 40 in 1955 - was he also previously married?
-
Three trees on Ancestry have him born on 2nd March 1915 in Mansfield, Notts., and marrying Agnes G Heath, 1921-2005, but I can't find a marriage.
Also show a living son but, again, I can't see a record.

Wrong info on Ancestry tree!!
Agnes Gordon Heath supposedly b Cheadle 1921 - that birth was Agnes GENEVIEVE Heath
The Agnes GORDON Heath who died Staffs 2005 was b 12.1.1926 per death reg - but no birth found
-
Obit for Agnes GORDON Heath shows her as the wife of "the late Tom"
There is an Administration entry for her on the probate site
-
www.staffordshirebmd.org.uk - 1958 marriage - Charles Ryan to Agnes Gordon Heath/Agnes Gordon Redmond
Marriage in Somerset 1943 - Agnes G Redmond to Harry Heath

This is what I was able to OCR on my iPad (no edits):

I think AJH93 needs to advise obtaining a copy of either the 1943 or 1958 marriage certs to establish the name & surname of Agnes's father. If she was born 1926 she was barely 17 in 1943 so unlikely to have been previously married.
There is no fitting birth for an Agnes Gordon Redmond in England/Wales/Scotland
If Joseph Britton was the alleged father of a child born c 1944 & allegedly married to the mother - the birth cert should give parental details,
Or do you mean he was married to someone else?
His 1955 marriage cert should show his marital status - as mentioned above - he was 40 so may have been previously married

I have a theory that BNA sometimes used a version of OCR that was the brainchild of Professor Stanley Unwin :-)

A number of things don't add up here. If the 1943 marriage is correct - it was in Somerset in the Sept qtr 1943 & there appears to have been a child born in Lancashire in 1946 & another also in Lancashire in 1951
An illegitimate child born Newcastle around 1944 doesn't fit
