Title: Going round the houses with Eugenie Magdalene Landucci !
Post by: LaytonLily on Monday 03 November 25 16:22 GMT (UK)
So many people on this website have provided so much help over the years, doing what seems to me, impossible.  So hope for some guidance with this lady and her family.    Charles Edward Barnwell (father of Eugenie Rose) marries Eugenie Magdalene Landucci in 1900, giving her father as John Landucci, Carver.  I find her on the 1911 census age given 35y birth place says Shrewsbury.  Sent for the only birth certificate I could find for a Mary Eugenie Landucci born 1875 but that was registration in Sunderland and gave her father as George Andrew Landucci Stone mason.   I cannot find her on 1881 census.  I might have found her on 1891 census in Birmingham living with her mother, Elizabeth, no father shown but both born Shropshire.  By 1901 she was married but have not found them.  On 1911 census she is living with Charles Edward Barnwell, children Edward and Eygenie Rose. I cannot 'get a handle' on this research, so ask for your help in directing me.

Reporting a negative result, in case anyone else is tempted to go by this route:

At Eugenie Rose Barnwell’s baptism in 1905 the family abode is 18 Vere Street.
In 1901 at that address is a family named Walker.

Building News, London, 13th August 1886

Regarding a monument in marble in the general cemetery at Shrewsbury to the late Mr S. Pountney Smith, architect, who was the mayor of the borough in 1873.

"The design is one of a number prepared by Mr. Smith himself for monumental carvings, and has been executed by Mr. Landucci, of Shrewsbury."

So this 1869 advert attached looks like it will also be linked to the family.

Landucci,
Wyle Cop,
Shrewsbury.

Wood and Stone Carver

St Julian's Church, Shrewsbury

... "At the entrance to the space now appropriated as chancel is a low stone screen, and on this has been fixed a new and handsome pulpit of alabaster, with two sculptured panels. This pulpit is the work of Mr. G. L. Landucci, of Shrewsbury. The passages of the nave and of the chancel are laid with Messrs. Maw's encaustic tiles."

The contractor for the reseating and general builder's work in this portion of the church was Mr H. T. Darlington, of the Wyle-cop.

When I was an Apprentice Plumber doing Leadwork, I recall a Mason from Sapcote's, a company of Stonemasons working on the exterior high up on the scaffold telling us at Tea Break they would be living away from home for months, near the church that they were working on.

Added:
Seems it was William Sapcote and Sons of Birmingham, signs that we use to see a lot of.

A reredos - a decorative screen, partition, or wall hanging placed behind the altar in a church.

WOW  -  and again WOW !    Lots in reply for me to explore and work with.  Thank you so much you wonderful people.   I had seen some of the details given but couldn't verify, not finding anything for me to be able to confirm it was the right people .   I had found others named Landucci who were carvers, moulders, working with stone so well expected there would be that connection with the family.  Presumably going as far back to relate to Italy.   No doubt the men moved about for work, so wife / family might well be on their own for census night and not show the husband / father there.   Interesting that the name Landucci is quite often spelt differently /wrong !    But you have found them even so.

Don't know if this is the one?

I did an F M P search in the Census drop down from the BMD page (not Census menu) with just:-
Landucci in the surname and

Shrewsbury in the Optional Keywords box

A wide -/+ 10 years and 1855 in Birth Year box.

Eugenie and Eugenia come up in the results.

1861 St Julian's Shrewsbury
Trinity Race
George L. Landucci, Head, Mar, 33, Carver, born S-mmers Town, London.
Mary Landucci, Wife, 31, Born Ireland.
Mary Ann Landucci, 13, born Lambeth Surrey.
G. A. Landucci, Son, 12, born Lambeth, Surrey.
Anne Landucci, 10 born Lambeth, Surrey.
John Landucci, 7 born London.
Teresa Landucci, 6 born Lambeth Surrey.
Agnes Landucci, 4, born Shrewsbury.
Eugenie Landucci, 1, born Shrewsbury.

Line partly obscurring George L. Landucci, Birthplace but first letter may be an S

1871 St Julian's Shrewsbury
Wyle Cop
George L Landucci 43 Wood & Stone Carver, born London Old St Pancras.

John Landucci 17 Wood & Stone Carver, born Kent Road, Newington.

Eugenia Landucci, 11, Scholar, born Salop Shrewsbury.

Listed as far as Eugenia Landucci, but 5 more on the next page all born Shrewsbury.

Just as a rough guide to find the churches etc., (not for Legal definition) ...

The modern British Library Euston sits within the Somers Town boundary.

It looks like part of Somers Town was demolished to build St Pancras Station and Hotel.

Many thanks for more information.  I feel greatly encouraged now that I can find them  !   Foolishly I did not check where Atcham was - when I saw that I discounted - but it is Shropshire !  To make a start I have sent for the marriage certificate of John Landucci and Betsey Price and birth certificate for  Eugenie 1875 - the correct one this time !     I will see who I can find in the family on the British Newspaper Archive website.   I will chase up all the information you have all sent to me.

Re the 1861 census for George’s pob - probably Somers Town - fits with St Pancras in 1871 census.

Sorry, I missed your addendum Mark.  :)

On Wednesday, April 25th, Berriew Church was opened and consecrated by the Bishop, after being under repair. It includes our seats for 400 persons. The cost of the referral was 3,500p. The carving done in it by Mr. G. Landucci.

There are other mentions of Landucci in the newspapers,  a few are sports related but in the right areas.

If this is your family wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to see work done by your ancestors. 🙂

I have said it before and I will say it again - you are all wonderful !  Your have provided more than ever I could hope for.     I am doing the FH for a friend and had said I doubt I will be able to get back to the original Landucci from Italy  -  but it appears you might have done just that.      I have successfully completed (as far as I am going to) her other 3 lines, back to 1700's, but this Landucci line was frustrating me.    I did research for a related family member which was one of my FH lines but researched for her particular family lines and that included moulders / carvers of stone originally from Italy (Enrico Cantoni and Romola Landi two of the names) and I found so much information on them including from newspapers and articles online.

On Monday 24 June 1895 a George Landucci born 1848 was admitted to Woolaston House Workhouse from Newport. He was a wood and stone carver, Roman Catholic.
