Title: What happened to Ethel Pontin?
Post by: Freya Ellingsen on Monday 03 November 25 11:08 GMT (UK)
Ethel was born Ethel, Marie Maurer in 1882 Geelong, Victoria.
She married Ernest Pontin in 1904 Geelong. They have two children, Clarice 1905 and Dorothy in 1904. Both children were placed in care in Geelong Orphan Asylum Victoria in  abt 1906.
Nothing further can be found about Ethel..
We know Ernest died in 1950 and we can see that the two female babies went on to marry but what happened to Ethel, Any clues?
Thanks

The Victoria  Petty Sessions register 28th May 1906 mentions Ethel Marie Pontin and Ernest James Pontin - It would appear that Ernest left his children without adequate means of support at Geelong on 8th May 1906

Hello, there is a tree on Ancestry which has Ethel remarrying in 1927 to a Graham McNair and dying in Flemington, Victoria in June 1971.
I know that some of the information on ancestry trees is untrustworthy but it might be worth checking it out.

Thanks for looking this is the wrong Ethel M Pontin.
As the Ethel Im looking for was born Ethel M Maurer in 1882, Geelong Victoria, father was Victor Louise Maurer her mother was Mary Ann Hensel, Pontin being her married name.
This Ethel Mary Pontin you have found was born in 1905 her father was Victor Harold Pontin and mother was a Beatrice Eyre.
Thanks, the mystery continues.

Freya, On the marriage certificate of Dorothy PONTIN to Patrick STOREN , 1924, Dorothy I think names her parents.
Is it mentioned there whether mother is deceased?

Hi,
In my reply #7, I asked about the details on Dorothy's (nee PONTIN) marriage certificate.

Do you have this certificate.
Are you able to answer my question?

the record posted by jorose is interesting.

The authorities completing the paperwork for the orphanage admission state Ethel has "deserted" the children while the whereabouts of the father Ernest is known.

He is stated at Autumn Street Geelong which is the address of his parents George Stephen and Julia PONTIN.

The list of relatives to the children shows the exact relationship to them a bit confused and not completely accurate.

Maybe they helped the girls later on?

Hi Sue,
Yes I have studied that doc over and over I only had the abstract given to me recently, but it's the same as wording as original. I recall if a relative does collect a child it was recorded, this happened with my own father and brothers their eldest sister collected them when she married. But it seems this didnt happen with the girls they stayed their until they were at the age to work....

Perhaps you have evidence of that being the case, but I would say the files on the girls are incomplete.
Maybe missing, removed or misplaced. You can easily flip through the case books and see more detailed information in the records of other children admitted. I have looked through the books A to P, to locate PONTIN without result.

QUESTION

What was the address of each girl given on their marriage certificates and who were the witnesses?

As there seems no immediate clues to the location of Ethel, you may need to look at pointers and clues from other directions
