Title: Burial of a baby Gap Lane Cemetary Merton
Post by: Skaife on Tuesday 28 October 25 12:59 GMT (UK)
Hi I have found the deaths and burials of a couple ( James & Lucy Gardiner) in Gap Road Cemetary. James died in 1916 and Lucy in 1925.

I accessed the details of the burials on Deceased on Line and was surprised to see a baby was also buried with them. The baby, Dorothy Raven, died in 1894 - hers was the first burial in the plot. I have found her birth (June 1894)  and  Baptism which gives the names of her parents as Eliza and William Blakemore Raven. I presume this couple paid for the burial plot.

I know families did buy burial plots so members of the family could be buried together but I cannot find any link between this baby's family and the couple who died many years later.

Were, I wonder, plots resold to others at later date?

Eliza's maiden name was Hitchings & their marriage was 1893

Lucy was Lucy C H Gardiner & she was 72 so b around 1850

James was 65 so born around the same time

GRO death online shows Lucy as Lucy Charlotte Harriet & there is an 1853 birth on freebmd for a Lucy Charlotte Harriet Blandon so no obvious connection.  She married James Gardiner in 1872 as Harriett Blandon

Thankyou Carole for checking those details - I agree with your findings. On the 1911 census James and Lucy Gardiner state they had had 12 children, I've found 11 of them so had wondered if this child was the 12 child.
However,  the surname of the baby who is buried with the Gardiners,  is Raven so my ideas are incorrect. I've also found details showing the birth &  baptism of 2 month old Dorothy Raven and her parents names just do not link with the couple buried in the same plot.
