Hello
Looking for any info on one Lilly Gilmour who went to Canada from a Childrens Home in Glasgow in 1880-81 period according to relative. She was born in 1867 or so in Glasgow, Scotland so we know her parentage.
She married a William(?) Chant in Canada and remained there.
Any info welcome. Thank you.

Welcome :)
Just reviewing the post and there is a transcription error for Jessie Gourley that I didn't pick up. In 1901 census her birth is given as 16 July 1871, aged 29. In 1921 her age was transcribed as age 30. Having a closer look at that census it is actually age 50.

Hi,
Something I've been pondering....
On John's death cert. it gives his (2nd)wife as Jessie Williams. I think this is an error. I think it should be Jessie Gourley. She appears on the headstone with John W. and Lilias with death dates 1869-1944.
I am not seeing a second marriage for John, but there is a death cert for Jessie Margaret Chant b. 16 July 1869 Scotland d. 20 Jan. 1944 in Leeds, Ontario, carcinoma, wife of John W. Chant, parents unknown, informant was step-son Wilbert Chant.

Thank you again.
I think Jessie and Liily were maube childhood friends from Scotland.
Lilly lost her mother in 1870 and her father, William was left with Lilly and other children. I think Lilly was the only one to be given up as Father couldn't cope. Just my opinion.

Hi,
I came across a passenger list for Jessie Gourlay age 11 in May 1879 from Glasgow to Quebec,
with another 23 males and 25 females all under age 15.
Sadly, they had something in common.
There is a photo of J.W. Chant's store here from 1908. Click on the right side to see the full
image. He may be the man standing outside. It looks like it was also a Post Office.

Very good info.
I gather that it is very expensive to get a copy of Lily's documents in the UK.
Thank you again

Hi,
I am not familiar with Scottish documents, perhaps a post on the Scotland board. They will be able to give you some advice/guidance etc.

Rosie - thank you for your posts. I have already seen the documents you mention and been on Scotlandspeople.
When I said documents earlier I meant Quarriers records relating to her movement from Scotland. I understand they charge a substantial amount for copies. I am not paying for it frankly.
Thank you again.
