Post by: Jason Jase on Thursday 23 October 25 16:45 BST (UK)
I am trying to push back my tree on a family line with a common name.
So people can see it they are on family search William Howard Matthews LWVM-TR6
and wife Mary Barrett L8RW-5KY. They are heavily research so what I need help with is William Matthews Grandparents and above.

William's parents are said to be William Matthews and Mary Wragg. Can anyone help me with this?

Can you include some dates - birth/marriage/death  etc.  It is always advisable to include details in your post including what census info you have as it saves peoples time having to try to find the record you are referring to

William Mathews married Mary Barrett (minor) 2 March 1852 at Crich.

His father  William  - ...inger ? Could be Stockinger

Her father William  - Miner

Witness Joseph Elliott and Ann Barrett.
--------------------

The William and Mary 1841 Belper William is a cotton frame work knitter, the occupations don't match unless a frame work knitter is also a Stockinger

deleted wrong family

In 1861 census

The family before William 1832 Coal Miner and his wife Mary is :-

William Mathews 59 Frame work knitter born Watnall Notts. and his wife Mary 70 born Heath Derby

probably his father but no proof.

It may prove useful to get the death certificates for Mary Mathews who died April 1871 age 80 to see who registered her death.(Buried 16 April 1871 of Swanwick.)

Likewise William Mathews who died 1878 age 77 reg. Belper.

GRO cost is £3 for a digital copy.

so I found another persons tree that has

William Howard Matthews

D:21 Feb 1887 14 Mile Ranch, Rock Springs, Sweetwater, Wyoming, USA

parents as

William Matthews snr
B:7 Jul 1797 Pentvich, Derbyshire, England
D:Jan 1889 Belper, Derbyshire, England
and

Mary Crisp
B:12 Jun 1796 St. Peter, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England
D:13 Apr 1871 Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England

on family search his parents are listed as

William Matthews
Birth: abt 1802
Wattnall, Nottinghamshire, England
Death: Jan 1889
Belper, Derbyshire, England

and

Mary Wragg
Female
MZPR-P86
Birth: 1791 Heath, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom

other than Mary Wragg's death in Swanwick (if that is even right) the exact location of William Howard Matthews birth I can't tell which couple is his parents.

I have included the peoples familysearch ID numbers all documents are attached to there profile and is free to access worldwide William Howard Matthews has 32 sources attached to him it would be hard to pick which one would be most useful.

Based on the information On Ancestry and Family search it appears his parents are William and Mary. My problem is which ones.

Clearly, YOU have added the middle name to the FamilySearch tree that you quote.
Why?
Where did you get that name?
It does not appear on any of your source documents.

ARE YOU COPYING OTHER PEOPLE'S MISTAKES?

Not the most scientific way to go about it but in the 1841 census it states the William Snr and Mary the parents where born in Alfreton.

One of the William Matthews is born in Pentrich, (mistranscribed as Pentvich) Derbyshire, England which is about 5km away so basically Alfreton

I found a record of a Mary Wragg being married to Joseph Crisp on ancestry where I don't have a subscription and can view it. So maybe Marry Wragg is Mary Crisp?? can anyone find this?

As for Mary's death

 Name   Mary Matthews
Age   80 (this would make her born in 1791 the same years as Mary Wagg)
Event Type   Burial
Event Date   16 Apr 1871
Event Place   Swanwick, Swanwick, Derbyshire, England (location of my William Matthew's birth)
Record Type   Burial
Microfilm Number   2082372
Indexing Batch   V01787-6

There is a tree on ancestry for Richard son of William and Mary states born 26 June 1826 Swanwick

Derbyshire.  He goes to USA first to Indiana, then Nebraska dies in Colorado.
------------------
It says his mother Mary Mathews, formerly Crisp nee Wragg died in Thingoe Suffolk 1871 that's along way from Derbyshire.

The USA part looks to be well researched I'm not so sure about England as it says he married an Ann Johnson? who died 1864 he then married Martha Enyeart 1866 in Indiana.

Need to find the passenger lists for 1851 plus or minus a year or two.
1900 census he says he came to USA in 1851 and is a citizen, so his naturalization papers would help.

thank you, I makes sense that they went to America. The William Matthew (JR) which I know is right and most of his family ended up in Rock springs and became Mormons. They are very Well documented and all The photos online from this family are from a DNA match from that area.

Yes - first look for other children baptised to these parents. This will give you a clearer idea of when there might be a marriage to look for.

What marriages have you found? What have you eliminated?

Well on Family search somebody attached an Ann Oldham G7TJ-589, Ann Naylor KVT7-QDR, Ann Jones GSVT-N1N and I have entered an Anne ? GGYG-X9H connected to me. These Ann's are connected to Wragg christenings / Baptisms. Before somebody jumps down my throat saying I am copying others mistakes I want to say I can see this is a mess and not right.
