I come to you all with a very unusual request and am hoping for some expert help.
I'm working on a close friends family tree at the moment. He was for a time the proprietor of the Butterburn Bar on Gateside Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire.
The pub lays claim to being one of the oldest in Hamilton and certainly its been there since I was a very small child.
But something doesn't make sense. The buildings around the pub are odd. Indeed the pub itself juts out from under an old tenement. There's evidence that the building to the right of the pub was demolished and then much later another building replaced it which would first be an Iceland Food Store and then later Dimaggios Restaurant.
The Butterburn itself doesnt appear on any Valuation Roles. There is no mention of 44 Gateside street and yet 42 and 46 are listed
Does anyone have any clue as to how I can research this pub - I'm guessing the name Butterburn must be a fairly modern thing and it was previously called something else
Any help would be appreciated
As a starting point the Butterburn is at 44 Gateside Street, Hamilton - Believed to have been established in the 1800's - It looks to me like the lounge part was added at a later date (after the demolition of the building next door)

Butterburn that's a nice name.
Yes I agree it must have been called something else so finding that name would be a great help.
Are there old street directories you could look at - or trade directories for publicans?
If it's one of the oldest then there is probably written history about it somewhere.
Mention in newspapers perhaps if you try searching for the street name?
Good luck :)

There's no mention of these premises (or any other public house) in the 1862 Directory of Hamilton.
There are a couple of spirit dealers mentioned but neither are in Gateside Street.
Re the street number - has it always been No. 44 - a lot of towns went through a period of renaming and renumbering streets.

The earliest newspaper mention that I see for 'Butterburn Inn' is from 11 April 1866, Glasgow Herald—a notice concerning claims against the estate of the late Mrs Weir of the Butterburn Inn, Hamilton
In the 1865 Valuation Rolls there is a record for a house in Gateside Street (no number) occupied by Mrs Agnes Weir, spirit dealer

See snippet. On the 1901 Census Gavin Fleming, 60, spirit dealer, is at No 42 Gateside.

In 1936 the PH was still a single property, but by 1962 it was numbered "48 to 44".

Added: Put these two side by side on a split screen and line up with the corner of Brown Street.
