Title: Missing PRs
Post by: Norfolk Nan on Tuesday 14 October 25 14:48 BST (UK)

I'm sure I ought to know the answer to this but I don't so help!

How do you identify the parishes that aren't captured on Ancestry or Family Search or Find My Past please?  I'm assuming there must be a few.

Thanks.

Unless I'm missing your point, I would say the best way to find out is to go to the collections/card index search facility on the given website and type in the name of the parish or county and see what comes up, or more to the point, what doesn't. I don't think any of the subscription sites are going to tell you what they don't hold.

Personally when faced with the situation of not finding a parish register transcription on, say, FindMyPast, I go straight to FreeReg (https://www.freereg.org.uk/freereg_contents/new?locale=en) and check with their records as these tell you exactly how much of each parish's registers has so far been transcribed under the Baptisms, Marriages and Burials headings.

For example here's link to the extent of the transcriptions for the parish of St Mary and All Saints, Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire: St Mary's (https://www.freereg.org.uk/freereg_contents/5eb6be52f493fd65fbc4c134/show_church?locale=en)

Alternatively, go to FamilySearch's Wiki and type in the name of the parish and see what it lists, eg here (https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Beaconsfield,_Buckinghamshire,_England_Genealogy) for the same village of Beaconsfield.

Thanks both, great suggestions.  I've tended to trust that whichever-site has full coverage when I do a search and when nothing comes up, that's because there's nothing to see.  But sometimes I've gone elsewhere and hey presto!  I just wondered if there was a way to be forewarned before I hit search.

Thanks again.

OGI works the other way - it answers the question, "Where are the records for such-and-such a parish?"

Great suggestions, thanks everyone.

I'm looking for a missing baptism (not Sam Norman) and years ago I could type in the name, the county and probably a date range, and get a useful list of possibles to work with.  This week, because I want to double check past efforts, I've tried to create that list and failed.  The minimal list now misses out individuals that should be included so I've no faith in the search at all.  The software seems worse these days, not smarter and now I'm looking for other ways to achieve the same results.  Is it just me?

Just to say that there are some good tips here.  :)
