Hi all,
Please can i have some help looking for the above person please. William married in 1886 to Sarah Coward in Penrith Cumberland, his age is given as 50 so born around 1836ish and her age was 30, William is widowed at the time of this marriage but im not sure who his first wife was. The 1891 census gives his birth place as Motherwell in Cumbria but by 1901 Sarah his wife is a widow age 42 and living in Botchergate Carlise. I have looked on the 1881 census and there is a William Dixon with wife Jane Dixon, living on Old London Road Cumberland, the children, William John, Agnes, James and George are all registered under the maiden name of Ewart but there is no marriage that i can find for a William Dixon and Jane Ewart, any help with this and finding William Dixon in earlier census would be greatly appreciated, thanks x x

What information did the marriage certificate give for his father
-
I don't think there is a Motherwell in Cumbria. There is in Scotland.
The census gives place of birth as Melmerby, Cumberland.
His father's name was James, according to marriage record.
-
I think the 1891 has his birth place as Melmerby.
-
We assume that the daughter Mary A Dixon born Patterdale, Westmorland abt. 1880 is from his first marriage?
-
She is Mary Agnes COWARD.
COWARD, MARY AGNES
No mother's maiden surname

Rosie 99, his age is another mystery, his marriage in 1886 to Sarah Coward says he is 50, the 1891 census, even though its only 5 years later, states he is 65. The marriage is only a transcription so there is a chance i suppose his age been transcribed wrong and his was actually 60 in 1886, would make a bit more sense i think x
-
He possibly lowered his age at marriage so as not to appear to be so much older than Sarah.
The William you found in 1881 with wife Jane gives his age as 32 in 1861, 47 in 1871, and 53 in 1881.
His birth place is constant as Motherby. His wife Jane was born in Scotland and their possible first child bn c1858 Penrith.

Rosie99 ive just found this marriage in the paper in1 1886
William Dixon, to Sarah Coward both of Old London Road, Penrith.
In 1881 William Dixon is living at this address with Jane and 5 children, so this is defo his first wife, all the children are registered under the Ewart name but i cant find a marriage for William with a Jane Ewart anywhere x

That is a really good find ;D

I wonder if this is his baptism
Greystoke, Cumberland
William Dixon
Father James
Mother Ann
Birth date ? ? 1830
Baptism date 31 Jan 1830

I came to the same conclusion. 1851 census finds the possible parents at ref 2425 340 15. Son George born Motherby.. Struggling to find any of the family in 1841 census though.
SS
added, going by the births of John & Jane they should in 1841 be in Dacre. All children have surname Edmondson. Parents married Greystoke 1826.
1841 under DICKSON
James Dickson 35
Ann Dickson 35
William Dickson 11
James Dickson 9
Mary Dickson 7
George Dickson 5
John Dickson 2

Has anybody had any luck finding Williams first marriage to Jane ? he was with her on the census in 1861,71 and 1881. The children are registered under the name of Ewart apart from John Dixon in 1862 and its spelt as Hewit x

Thanks loads for that, much appreciated. Im beginning to wonder if Jane could have been married before she married William Dixon, im thinking that because in 1861 she was already 34. If thats correct she would have a different name when she remarried to William and would explain why i cant find a Ewart and Dixon marriage x

William in 1841 census has a sister Mary. Wondering if this is a double wedding.
