Title: Temperance Hotel, Barker Gate, Nottingham 1880s
Post by: ValJJJ on Wednesday 08 October 25 09:01 BST (UK)
I've just found a Nottingham Evening Post article from 1st June 1888 (attached) regarding a court case and mentioning widowed Mrs Anne Crook and her son George. I am trying to pinpoint when she took on the temperance hotel in Barker Gate (which would have been after her husband died in Jan 1885 in Wiltshire), and when she switched businesses to a grocery/off-licence at 59 Alfreton Rd, Radford.

I thought it amusing that she'd switched from a temperance establishment to running an offy!

I can't find any more (I'm using FindMyPast newspaper search) other than her applying for a Sunday licence in August 1888.  By the end of 1889, she was living in Green Bank, Matlock, according to her marriage record to William Matthews of Nottingham.

I already have quite a lot of info about Ann(e) Crook up to 1885 and after 1889, but would like to establish when she moved to Nottingham, and when she moved to Matlock.

Thanks.

Edward HICKLING, grocer and provison dealer of 59 Alfreton Rd was bankrupt in 1887. A detailed account of the first meeting of creditors here:

Friday,  Sept. 16, 1887
Publication: Nottingham Evening Post

The business first advertised "To let/For Sale" 8 Oct 1887 and last advertised "To let - ingoing £16" (no mention of sale) appeared 14 Feb 1888.

That was fast!  Thanks to both of you.

maddys52 - I'll look up more about Hickling.

hanes teulu - I think you are referring to the grocer's shop?  So it looks like Ann Crook kept it on as owner and might have left Nottingham for Matlock once she found a tenant.

Thanks very much for that.  Wonder what ingoing means?  Is that the income from sales?

Edit: According to Collins dictionary
(often plural) English law
the sum paid by a new tenant for fixtures left behind by the outgoing tenant

Now found this in 13 Jan 1888 Nottingham Evening Post.

And another ad 'to be sold or let' on 12th Jan 1888.   Seems the wording of the ads varied between to be sold, to let or the choice.

And another 'apply to 92 Alfreton Rd' that is probably related.  10th Feb 1888.  So possibly the new owner/tenant didn't want these items.

Meanwhile - I still can't find much about the temperance hotel in Barker Gate and am trying Facebook history groups for that.

Thanks.  Perhaps it wasn't specifically a temperance hotel, but just a hotel with no alcohol licence.  I'll look at that directory later today.  Shame there's only 1885 as that might have been too early for her to have upped sticks from Calne with her family.

I didn't expect to find "your" Annie in the 1885 Directory - these Directories take time to put together/update. Had hoped it might identify a Temperance Hotel in that locale..

No sign of an hotel on this 1880/81 map of Barker Gate -
West side -   https://maps.nls.uk/view/231277839#zoom=4.7&lat=7664&lon=13443&layers=BT
East side -    https://maps.nls.uk/view/231277842#zoom=3.7&lat=7994&lon=2043&layers=BT

I also "walked" Barker Gate on the 1881 Census - nothing to identify a possible Temperance Hotel

Thanks for looking further.  I can see a few references to pubs in Barkergate in newspaper archives so I wonder if a licensee left one, and it naturally evolved into a temperance establishment?  I'll do some delving this evening.

I haven't found any newspaper articles about a new temperance hotel in Nottingham in the 1880s at all, nor about an existing one in Bakergate. Possibly the newspaper printed the wrong street?

Benjamin Hartley Fairbrother was a boarder in Stockport in the 1881 census, age 38, unmarried, born Warrington, financial agent and accountant.

Wonder what 'gained ascendancy over' meant in relation to the daughter?

I've searched the 1881 and 1891 Nottingham census with the keyword 'temperance' for address or occupation but only found a temperance hotel at Houndsgate (that also pops up in newspaper articles) and Westgate.

He is listed in Lancashire, Manchester & Salford, Slater's Directory Pt 1, 1883 as accountant & financial agent, Levenshulme, Manchester.

It's on the to-do list.  I probably need to visit to look at electoral rolls and any local directories that haven't been digitised.

I note you intend to visit the Nottingham archives.  perhaps check out the following https://picturenottingham.co.uk/image-library/image-details/poster/ntgm005529/posterid/ntgm005529.html

There was another hotel like the one seen here on Shakespeare Street and Lester's Temperance Hotel on Hounds Gate. A Temperance Movement Hall was designed by the renowned Nottingham Architect Watson Fothergill but never built. Watson Fothergill also built a Coffee Tavern for the Temperance Movement in Hucknall (1884).

Maybe the Coffee Tavern which may have been in Barkergate Hucknall is the establishment you are searching for.

purlin: a great find!

It gave me the idea to search for coffee tavern and temperance keywords for the 1881 and 1891 census but although I found a few, I didn't find any Barker Gate addresses. And only found owners and their staff, with no-one listed as a lodger on census night.

Good call about Barker Gate in Hucknall as I was focused on Barker Gate in Nottingham.  Now to see how many Barker Gates there were around and about.

I don't know when I'll visit the archives - probably in a month or so.

Perhaps need to widen my search, geographically speaking.
