Hi there. For many years now my research had a relative of mine had died at sea. this was indeed not a surprise as he was a sailor and I accepted it as the case.
His name was Hugo Kingborn around 1854 in Whitehaven, England. His father was William Alkin and his mother was Agnes. on 11/07/1871,age 18 he received his UK apprentice indenture for the merchant navy leaving Liverpool and signing-up for a 4 year period. Early records had his death listed in 1872. However things have recently come to light that suggest he actually left the ship and stayed in Australia. Could this be the case?
Another thing, a total long shot, his grandfather and great uncle (guilders, glass makers and cabinet makers) always marked their work and an impressive 2-stage cabinet with inlay made 1851 was sold years later and apparently is now in Australia. Was this bought by members of a King family whose ancestor was Hugo? Any thoughts or ideas would be interesting.

Hi
His Admin for 31.5.1881 was granted to his brother Robert Dixon King saying he died sometime 1872 and onwards.
But actually the facts are that he deserted the Ship Patterdale at Melbourne 24/12/1872.
It then says Ind recd CC21 27.3.1873 .
That's on a list of apprentices indentured into the Navy 1824-1910.
I don't know what Ind or CC21 mean but no real proof he died.
So yes I think he just stayed.
Trouble is ,he could have just changed his name and disappeared. There is a Capt Hugh King died 1921 in South Australia but not sure it's him.

HUGO KING — CALL on Mr. Little, 74 Johnston-Street, Collingwood; letters and money from Cumberland.
This might have been an attempt to get his attention if he was still alive.

There is no death for Hugo Walton KING Dec qtr 1872 (10b/437). Actually that Volume/page is for Kendal.

Yes I see that.. it must be a transcription error but why has it listed his full name? According to probate he died 1872 place unknown.
Perhaps he died whilst in the Merchant Navy, at sea?

Perhaps he died whilst in the Merchant Navy, at sea?
As ciderdrinker noted, he deserted at Melbourne. This note on his apprenticeship record.

Could he be Hugo King who married Margaret Carroll in 1872?

I think that as the registration number for that marriage is quite low (952/1872), it was earlier in the year. Hugo KING deserted on 24 December 1872.
It seems the Patterdale arrived in Melbourne on 27 Nov 1872.

This obituary notice rules out the Hugh KING mentioned by ciderdrinker I think.

From Trove.nla.gov.au
Patterdale departed Melbourne 24/12/1872 for San Francisco via Newcastle.
If his desertion is correct perhaps he just didn't board the ship before departure and hence was designated as a deserter. So he MAY have died in Dec 1872 or his date of death was given as the last time seen i.e. 24/12/1872. (Sorry if this isn't too clear!)
There are a couple of references to a Hugo King Fined for larceny from March 31 1884 (Vic Petty sessions) But doesn't prove its him.
