Born Brechin 28 August 1850 to James Robertson (d 1890) and Jean Rodger (d 1859).
Married Jane Clark (1854-1945) on 7 June 1876 in Brechin. No children.
Occupation hairdresser.
In 1881 census he and Jane were in Brechin.
In 1891 he and Jane were in Edinburgh.
In 1901 Jane was in Edinburgh, described as a widow. She remarried in 1927.
There is only one James Robertson born 1850 plus or minus three years and died between 1891 and 1901 whose mother's maiden name isn't in the deaths index, and it isn't him.
(He's not the James Robertson who died in Brechin in 1950 aged 100, either.)
A James Lindsay Robertson served with the Black Watch in the Boer War (Pte No 7584), but I can't imagine a hairdresser aged almost 50 signing up to be a private soldier at that stage of his life, and I have yet to find an actual service record - all I can find is where he served in South Africa and what medals be was awarded. (WO100/190 page 388; WO100/190 page 515)
Nothing in DeceasedOnline and nothing more in FindMyPast.
Ideas, anyone?

Good Morning.
I've tried Ancestry and they have transcripts of the 1901 census.
Burns St ,Glasgow St George in the Fields
Model Lodging House
James Robertson 50 lodger born Beechen ,Forfarshire.
Han Dresser
There are 50 lodgers ,all men so I won't list them all.
FindMyPast says he is a hair dresser and married.
Just checking he's not this chap buried at Barry Angus
James L Robertson age 50 buried 19.12.1900 Died Chillan Chile
same grave David L Robertson died at Moffat 4.5.1886 age 34.
It doesn't look like him.
The bloke in Glasgow looks a lot more like him.
There is a death
Robertson James 77 mmn Rodgers 1928 Pollokshields on Scots People
That looks like him.
Maybe ???

Thank you.
The one in the model lodging house looks likely.
If so Jane was lying when she said in 1901 that she was a widow.
But the 1928 death isn't him - occupation, wife and parents don't match and the informant was a son-in-law.
And I have already checked the one buried in Barry - or at least the other one on the stone, who is David Lawson Robertson, mother's name Lawson. I can't think that someone who died in Chile could be buried in Barry in 1900 - and if the one in the model lodging house is correct, it's impossible anyway.

Hi
He’s in the 1871 census..aged 20 living at 2 Sunnybank Place, Edinburgh South Leith.
It’s a Thomas Robertson aged 42 (Mason)who is head. He was also born in Brechin.

Thank you. I have that census - except that the transcription I used says the head is (his father?) James Robertson, not Thomas. I'll check the original.

Yes. Wrong occupation, wife and parents and the informant is a son-in-law although as far as I know he had no family.

Yes, thank you. He was with his wife in Thistle Street in the 1891 census.

Checked the original and it's definitely James (well, Jas) who is head.
Oh, the joys of poor transcriptions! FindMyPast was correct, although it has expanded the name from Jas to James, which is naughty.

Yes, except that his middle initial is R and the one in the 1871 census is James L.
I think that James R died in Glenmuick Tullich and Glengairn in 1922.
Ancestry…..
Might have known. How could anyone possibly transcribe that as Thos?
And they have managed to misspell Forfarshire.

As you say……Ancestry.

Do you want any information about siblings?
I have most birth/baptism, marriage and death details, plus most censuses, for all his siblings except Alexander b 1859, whom I can't find after the 1971 census.
If you have any information it would be very welcome, but don't spend a lot of time digging specially.
-
Two siblings died very young….Susan aged 2 and David aged 0
-
Yes, I have all the family's deaths except James' and Alexander's.
-
Only one that fits the bill on Ancestry but it’s private……
I don’t mind sending them a message…
Cheers
