Title: NYC Address search on 1900 US Federal Census
Post by: mrhodes114 on Sunday 05 October 25 16:03 BST (UK)
I have been attempting to find two specific addresses in Manhattan, NY, NY, on the 1900 US Federal census with no luck so far. I have used Steve Morse's site to search by street and number and still nothing. Anyone have any tips or maybe can locate these addresses:

36 Bond Street AND
208 W 113th Street

Thanks!

That is the first place I would have recommended. I don't know of any better.
Did you use modern day Google maps to narrow down the cross streets? From the looks of it, you'd have to know the former names of two of them.
On the other hand, I have sometimes used his site and run into the same problem - the street number or the street itself is just not in the ED.
I guess you could try choosing ED Description (transcribed)    instead of the census pages themselves and see if that helps.

It looks like the one he points to, ED 135, for Bond Street has the odd numbered side of the street, but not the even. You could look for a map of the ED's and see which one was across the street. Or try the ED numbered before and after 135.
Try the same for W. 113th. Tedious and not always successful.

Choosing interactive map of the ED takes you to https://gannett.cc/?year=1900.
I didn't stick with it long enough to see if it helped.

What events happened at those two addresses that made you interested in them? And can you list the families that you are trying to find in the 1900 Census with first and last names, ages, place of births? Maybe someone can find them. Everyone has their own tricks for searching.

All you ever wanted to know about 36 Bond St. You might have most of this.

Streets in ED 135, acc to stevemorse
Bowery, Bleeker St, Great Jones St, East 4th St, Lafayette Place

Both sides of Bond Street are in that rectangle today, but there is no 36 Bond St

By 1900, the once-fashionable “Bond Street” neighborhood was primarily a commercial area known for printing and manufacturing.

So was there a residence there in 1900?

Thank you for your responses. I have just joined this site so I am still figuring out how to use it. Not sure if I can respond to specific comments or not so I am just posting a general reply here:

I am in search of these addresses on the 1900 census because I am looking for a man on that particular census and these are the addresses that are listed for him in the 1900 NYC directory. After further discussion in another group, the Bond Street address was likely his business address so it would not appear on the 1900 population schedule. The 113th address was likely his home address, however, 208 is not enumerated on the census as far as I can tell. It goes from 200 to 226.
