Title: War diary for 4th Bn London Regiment
Post by: alison300 on Saturday 04 October 25 19:22 BST (UK)
It's been a while since I looked at war diaries on Ancestry and I can't find the 4th Bn., London Regiment.

I'm researching Capt. Eric Giles who died of wounds on 16 July 1916 (at Le Tréport).

Can anyone tell me which Division this battalion came under so I can locate the diary and work back from this date?

As he received his wounds at Gommecourt, then probably 56th (London) Division.

By 1916 the picture is a little complicated as the original 4th Battalion later became 4 separate battalions named 1/4, 2/4 etc. That said, 3/4 and 4/4 did not serve overseas, and 2/4 were at Gallipoli in 1916, so Capt Gill must have been in the 1/4th Battalion, which was part of 56 (London) Infantry  Division (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/56th_(London)_Infantry_Division) in France from Feb 1916.

Thank you both Andy J2022 and tonepad - it all sounds very complicated but I think Ancestry have some records for the 56th Division so I'll search there.  Thanks again  :)
