Hi, trying to find the date of death of William Jesse Bateman who passed away in hospital on holiday in Crete at Easter (april) prob around 1984ish. Him and his family were flown home to England.
Not sure if what registration of death crete would have at this time
Thankyou
Lynn

So when was your William born?
If he was buried/cremated in England - which county?
You will need his birthdate & at least the correct year of death to apply for any documentation
Did he leave a will?  Probate will show his date of death

Believe it or not it was 1907 (we think) but defo died in the 80s
Thanks x

There is only one birth in 1907 for a William Jesse Bateman. The tree on Ancestry shows a birthdate of 15.3.1907 Staffordshire and a death date of 12 Jul 1997 Staffordshire

There is no GRO death reg for that name in Staffs in 1997 so looks like the tree owner has the wrong death
Does the birthdate 15.3.1907 correspond with your William?

			-
It does Carole. I know they have the death date wrong. But as you say cannot find GRO reg either. But having just spoken to my friend a few moments ago, as i said he was there so knows it was easter and was in crete

But as you say cannot find GRO reg either.
If he died abroad  then the death would surely be registered in the country in which it occurred. It wouldn't appear on the GRO index which only applies to deaths that occurred in England and Wales?

				Hi Jen
The GRO reference relates to his alleged 1997 death on the Tree on Ancestry.  It says he died Staffs 1997 in which case it would be on the GRO index - but it isn't.  I have messaged the tree owner

Find my past has deaths registered abroad, but I am not sure if they will cover the 1980's

			-
				Thanks for the reply JenB
Thats why i was asking if it was recorded in crete x

			-
This is the current advice, but I don't know if it applied around 1984

The death doesn't appear on the consular indices on FindMyPast.

				Thankyou JenB
May have to see if they will issue his family another cert, as they must have had one originally to bury him in great barr

			-
Have you contacted Gt Barr to establish when he was buried as that will at least confirm the year of death & his burial records may even give his actual death date

			-
I was just about to say the same as Carole - the burial record should show his date of death.

			-
Will have to contact the church st margarets in great barr. See if they can help. Also my friend stated his grandfather was buried so will ask if theres a headstone.
I always pick complicated family trees to do but where theres a will (which there isnt 🤣) there will be a way.
Thankyou to you both for your help. Will  update if or when i find out

It appears he died on 26 April 1981, his death announcement was in the Staffordshire Sentinel on 6 May 1981.

Glad I was able to help, this is why I love the old newspapers.
Now that you have his death date and burial date, St. Margaret's Church may be able to tell you if there is a headstone for him.
