Hello from Norway.
Any knowledge about Buchanan family.
Can this be the right one, but did William die soon after his marriage Cathrine Donovan and birth of a son John? Then Cathrine did marry Owen Murray i 1867 as a widow and renamed her son Murray?
Can I find them in a census to se that I have the correct family.
This is my wifes family :-)
Regards Vidar

PS I have ordered a Marriage cert for Owen and Cathrine to Norway but that takes 2-3 weeks :-)

Possible death for William 1861 age 74 age doesn't match the census
Possible death for Ann 1867 age 69 again the age doesn't match the census

The baptism of the children also gives their birth dates
Hannah 22 October 1839
William 7 June 1840

I was looking at the burials for Bishopwearmouth, that William I can add was a mariner and was in the workhouse when he died???
Ann 1867 I can rule out, she was married to a musician; haven't got very far 1871.

Looking at the link you gave, your wife is descended from John MURRAY and Minnie ORMISTON both born in the 1860s in Sunderland but married in Scotland in 1886.
Owen MURRAY and Catherine (maiden surname DONOVAN) didn't have a son named John living with them in census records. Their eldest son, Owen, was a shipwright like his father and is still living with his mother and siblings in 1891 in London.
If you want help with your MURRAY family you really need to post specific details like information from John and Minnie's marriage cert.

If Minnie's parents names came from her marriage cert then this is their marriage:
Marriages Dec 1864
ORMSTON, Matthew William
SOWTER, Jane Young
Sunderland 10a 717
Jane divorced Matthew in 1872. They had three children, Sarah Jane (1865), Jane (1867), and Mary Young (born 1870 died 1871). Minnie's birth name must have been Jane.
Jane Young SOWTER had two more marriages:
Marriages Mar 1877
DUNCAN, Robert
ORMSTON, Jane Young
Newcastle T. 10b 174
Marriages Dec 1882
DUNCAN, Jane Young
KENNY, James
Tynemouth 10b 342

There's an Owen Murray (33) with wife Catherine (32) and sons John 7 and Owen 2 in Normanton (Wakefield district) in 1871. Parents both Irish, Owen's a labourer. John b Leeds, Owen in Normanton
Owen and Kate in Bishopwearmouth in 1881 also have a son Owen of a similar age. I wonder if a link has been made between these two entries. However the occupations, ages and places of birth don't match otherwise

The 1871 Wakefield family have mmn as Mulvey so don't think there is a connection.
Owen was born 1868

Obtaining the 1870 birth cert may help with address search to possibly find family in 1871. Some birth & death certs are available as instant digital download for a cost of £3.00 if unaware.

Think this maybe John in 1881. Registered 1864 as Buchanan at birth but going as Murray in census.
1881
60 Peacock St, Bishopwearmouth
Piece 4991, Folio 45, Page number 37
Thomas Boyd 40 Head, Scotland, Dairyman
Agnes Boyd 65 Mother, Scotland
Ann Gurkin 26 Servant
John Murray 16 Servant, Milk boy, born S'land (Sunderland)
Agnes is nee Young, long shot, but wonder if connected to the research by Dundee (Debra)

I was wondering about him too, but the John we are after became an Assurance Agent/Superintendent. Anything is possible, but I think he would have had a fairly good education and opportunities.
