This is Thomas Ryan. Born in Portlaw, Co. Waterford, Ireland, but moved to Croydon as a boy. This is the only picture the family has of him. What they know of this man is that he was a stableman/groomsman and that he had traveled back and forth to France, collecting and bringing horses back to England during WWI. It is thought that he might have been in a volunteer force rather than the regular army. Unfortunately, the photograph is not the clearest, but perhaps someone might be able to recognise the badge.

I would say that the cap badge is for the Army Service Corps
-
If he was dealing with the transport of horses to and from France he may have been part of the ASC Remount sevice.

Looks like this one if its the ASC. https://britishmilitarybadges.co.uk/products/ww1-army-service-corps-asc-cap-badge-82/

I would agree the way you describe him it sounds like ASC Remounts
so that drew me to this man:
Thomas Ryan R/385343 ASC.
The "R" prefix denotes Remounts.
This man was previously 23059 King's Own Royal Lancaster Regt.
& 15030 R. Munster Fus.
He transferred to the RASC 3/1/18.
No way of knowing if it's your man but he's the only Thomas Ryan
with this prefix.

You may find this if interest about the ASC transport.

Deffo ASC and can be dated to 1916 due to the leather buttons. They were issued due to the brass shortage.
