Title: Diary summary week ending 28th September 2025
Post by: louisa maud on Tuesday 23 September 25 15:55 BST (UK)
Hello folks , on to yet another new week, doesn't time fly?

Getting colder now, sadly.

Had a board meeting in the local hostelry for the Christmas bazaar, just 2 of us, executive meeting,  just how I like it, our new leader has some fantastic ideas to make money for the church, soon will come round.

Hope those who had falls lately are feeling more confident on their  feet , I know what it feels like to bounce on the floor,  not nice at all.

LM

Visited PAC at hospital today (Pre Anaesthetic Check).
As this is the 4th such check this year, it was restricted to Blood Pressure, groin and nasal swabs, and weight (which I did at home).
No ECG required, and no blood tests.

All clear, and set for my 3rd bladder op Friday week!
The first 2 ops failed to remove the stone!  3rd time lucky?

Yes,I too hope all goes well.
Are you in a hard water area? We are lucky it is very soft water here.
My son in law in Suffolk has kidney stones ,that is a hard water area.
Such pain!
Let us know how you go on,and best wishes for  a speedy recovery ,
Viktoria..

Might be a silly question,  can you clean brass with a silver cleaner.
Due to clean church brass, can't find the proper brass cleaner.

Brasso and Bar Keeper's Friend are the usual recommendations.

Both available on Amazon.
And Tesco!

I think that would be O.K. L.M.
I would not use Brasso on silver though, silver is a softer metal than brass .
I find if I wash the cleaned object in fairy liquid it takes longer to tarnish but I don’t have big vases or candlesticks like those in church not to mention the cross and the processional cross.
Lemon juice and salt isn’t bad either but then the cleaned objects must be washed.
I like cleaning brass and silver.

I've made sure I've no brass to clean - and the only silver on the house is the lovely old spoon the catfood is served with!Stylish, yes?

I went into 4 shops locally,  no brass cleaner, last one had the wadding which I had to buy, don't like it but it did the job till I can get the proper  brass cleaner liquid.
Personally  I don't own any brass

Hello KG

I wish you well and hope your Op is a definite success!

Hello All

Gillg, a man wanting you to fall for him, or on him  :o  ;)  ;D (gone for a selection of faces, to be on the safe side).

Thanks LM, going A over T, happened in an isolated place, so only witnessed by those above.

I washed my lenses in warm soapy water, rinsed and dried them with clean tissue and noticed the pad on one side of the bridge was bent over!

The frame of my new glasses has taken part of the impact.

The lenses were unscratched and survived!

LM, if you have to try another cleaner, try it on an area, which is not too visible at first.

TY, no brass to clean, sounds good, but if it gets out the feline is fed with silver spoon, you'll have all the strays and homeless knocking on't Front door! ...

I've made sure I've no brass to clean - and the only silver on the house is the lovely old spoon the catfood is served with!Stylish, yes?
TY

Does the spoon have monogram lettering too?

It sounds like your're in Mayfair, rather than the Old Kent Road  ;D

According to usual monogram lettering on silver items the surname is usually the middle letter (which is sometimes more pronounced), so your furry feline will need two initials too ;D

So if your cat is male and your surname was Yorky, an example might be, Horatio Nelson Yorky = HYN on the spoon ;D

After all that rambling, I'd forgotten to mention my walk nearby in the Autumn sun ... on the Public Footpath through Well Meadow field (Thursday).

I watched Nina Conti, Wednesday night, with that darn cheeky Monkey.

Just woke up with a bit of an upper respiratory tickle, having a Ginger Green tea  :) now

Heard an "expert" on TV recently saying that Brown Sauce works if you don't have Brasso, or other suitable product.

I haven't tried it but worth attempting on an inconspicuous spot

Would try sauce but it isn't my brass, but I could try on something that doesn't matter so much and might not be noticed, the treasurer  did a fantastic job on some of it with a machine, means I need not clean it with abrasives, just give it a rub over, no one else does it except me.
Very chilly this morning

I remember seeing that on Blue Peter when I was a kid.

I have tried tomato sauce on marked brass, but it didn't really work, however now I'll try brown sauce instead.  We have various bits of brass and copper, including the front door knocker, also an Arts & crafts Hugh Wallis copper tray with steel inserts and an Art Nouveau Scottish planter.  Planished Brass and copper are not easy to clean!

I don't like the wadding brass cleaner, which breaks off into little bits as you polish.  For silver I have one of those metal plates with holes in it which you put into a bowl of hot water with your silver cutlery, etc.  It's magic!

My late Grandmother who died well over 50 years ago played the Brown sauce trick on coins in a saucer as though it was a magic trick.

She told us afterward that the Brown sauce contained vinegar and other ingredients, also acetic acid which etched the oxidation away.

Added:
It left the coin clean, but not polished.

 ---------------

Some brass was / is - lacquered brass.

Once that lacquer surface is cleaned away, it will need cleaning on a regular basis.

 ---------------

Some metallic items are only brass plated and if worn away, you will be down to bare base metal and it often doesn't clean very well either.

But I would expect church brass to be good Solid Brass, but cannot say if it was lacquered or not.

 ---------------

When I was an Apprentice, the Master Plumbing & Heating Engineer told me to go and tell the Housekeeper that we had to sweat a joint on a leaking polished copper pipe and the heat may leave it discoloured, even after polishing.

The Housekeeper told the Hotel Owner who summoned the 'Resident Engineer' (a Carpenter by Trade), who came down and we warned him that it would show up due to heating and I was sent off in the van to get Brasso Duraglit (a tin containing pre-soaked wads), to do our best to get it polished as near as possible.

Mark

Added: Tomato Sauce doesn't work, this is the result on some coins given me in change, it lacks the acidic content, to etch away the oxidation.

Added:

Brown Sauce left the coin clean, but definitely not polished, nor shiny.

It is more of an acidic process and I would not use it for polishing.

Our solitary silver spoon has merely a blank shield shape on it, Bushinn1746. There is a spoon with it, but equally blank. Not posh, really, at all, probably one of my grandma's impulse purchases pre-war.
Ah well,  our cats aren't landed cattry at all. Just pampered and well-fed.

Brown sauce contains vinegar - acetic acid.
Cola contains phosphoric acid.
They will both dissolve the tarnish.

Hello All

Good to see you back KG, how did the Op go, or is it too soon yet to say?

TY, I was just in cheeky banter mood. Never thought of the phrase Landed Cattery, though  :)

Something happened during Friday am early hours as though I had a virus in the sinuses and very very dry throat, started in the night. I've been hitting it since, with a range of Green teas, water and milky and water coffees and Hot Milk Cacao. It then moved on to the G.I. system.

I've had cooked salmon, poratoes and all my veggies this dinnertime.

Feeling very groggy and very tired (you can rule out intoxication) my Red Wine rack is empty  :(

LM, I hope that brass does not end up like the Painting, in Mr Bean's film Whistler's Mother   :) , where Mr Bean tries to clean the face, rather than try a tiny test bit in the corner of the painting first  :)

I hope all those not feeling well, get well soon!

Just watched Freddie Flintoff’s programme “ Field of Dreams “.
It has been really enjoyable all the weeks it has been on.
The transformation of youngsters with little ambition or positive motivation and few if any opportunities has been amazing .
One girl in particular was amazing at the junior school the girls’ team
visited ,she had instant rapport and seriously ought to do a course to enable her to work with children, she was really good.
One lad on the Manchester team was really kind and supportive to his team and the girls team in their match. He had personal challenges but was unfailingly cheerful and enthusiastic .
It has been a really good programme ,and well done Freddie and his team, who knows where this will lead ,hopefully more teenage cricket , a stone has been dropped in a pool and let’s hope the ripples will spread.
Viktoria.

Hello Viktoria

Nice to hear of a positive sounding program.

I have not had TV on for several weeks, likely 2 or more months.

Seen a few Allen Millyard youtube series building his one-off motorcycles.

I've fallen asleep and then it is shower or supper time and up the wooden hill for shut-eye  8)

Take care, Mark

Best wishes K.G.Hope all goes well .
Alan Millyard is I believe an amazing  mechanic ,and I think Henry Cole’s previous one was too .
Henry does often choose easy options in the programme whereas Simon in Liverpool does amazing things with junk.
I like those programmes and those on BBC 1 too.
“Find it,fix it ,flog it” and “ Money for nothing” .
I am often shocked by what people throw away!

Hello All

Viktoria, I like the program at Henry Cole's, with Allen Millyard and Guy Willison 'Skid', sometimes Fuzz would turn up. Sometimes Henry Cole was knocking about about with Sam Lovegrove where they go off in the Van or Camper and look for abandoned stuff to make it useable or get it running, make a cup of tea and then go and haggle with the owner.

Fuzz Townshend, he was also a drummer, seemed to turn up after some of the work was done, sometimes in time for the jolly, but presented a program of his own, finishing off started or abandoned car projects.

I like Gemma and especially love her Liverpool accent!

Sorry KG, I must have misunderstood the week, all the best.

Mark
