Good evening everyone.
Ive put this here as this query spans Monmouthshire, Breconshire and Glamorganshire. I am looking for help finding a marriage of the parents of Alexander Lewis. Alexander was born 26 Feb 1863, Rhymney, Monmouthshire. And was still alive at the 1939 register which confirms this. Ive also got him in all census, but trying to find his parents who are John Lewis and Ann.
Parish church in Rhymney has baptisms for Alexander and 4 other siblings in 1867. John, Timothy, Mary and Hannah.
Looks like Alexander moved to Cefn Coed (near Merthyr) which comes under Breconshire. In 1871 and 1881 he's living with Uncle David Davies and Margaret Davies. So assuming Margaret is Johns sister.
Any advice greatfully appreciated trying to find the marriage or mothers maiden name.
Thanks,
David.

Forgot to add, John and Ann are alive in 1861 at 1, Plantation Rd, Merthyr.
John is a Moulder by occupation. And in 1851 is living in Aberdare with Evan Hopkins and wife Margaret. Stated as Brother in law. But when I search for the Evan Hopkins marriage I find that Margarets father is John who is also a Moulder. This marriage was in 1845 in the parish church of Aberdare.
Please can anyone help?
David.

I presume this is Alexander's birth registration
LEWIS, ALEXANDER
mother's maiden name THOMAS
Q1 1863 BEDWELLTY Volume 11A Page 106
1871 - Penuel Row Rhymney (same address as the baptisms)
John Lewis 50 widow, moulder, b Aberdare
Hannah Lewis 17 keeping house
John Lewis 14
Timothy Lewis 12
I see from 1861 that Ann is b Carmarthen. Margaret Davies is from Llansadwrn, Carmarthenshire, which suggests to me they're sisters

Thank you! How did you get the mothers maiden name? Ancestry doesn't show it. I have got the birth index by the way.
-
I had homed in on the birth registration Mar Qtr 1863, Bdwellty on FindMyPast - which does not include mother's maiden name. However, checking the General Register Office (GRO) it delivered the surname Thomas.
I was then drawn to the marriage registration of -
John Lewis, Sep Qtr 1861, Bedwellty, 11a 92 - on the same page Ann Thomas

I can't find Nicholas' birth reg to double check the Thomas connection
Added: perhaps that's the right marriage and Ann was actually a widow?
THOMAS, NICHOLAS

Very interested in this thread now that Thomas as a surname has cropped up.
Lewis as a first and last name appears regularly in my research in the general area of West herefordshire which includes Monmouthshire & Breconshire. If your early Lewis line has connections to Cecil, Gilbert,Howells, Parry and Thomas.
cheers

There's a birth registration for -
Timothy Lewis, Mar Qtr 1860, Merthyr Tydfil, 11a 304 - mother's maiden name Thomas.
The 1871 Census has birthplace Gelligaer which falls within the Merthyr Tydfil registration district.
But doesn't fit an 1861 marriage?
-
The 1861 marriage is after the census of that year when they're shown as married. But people aren't always truthful !
-
Thanks everyone for that. Just wondering how a Nicholas Thomas would be involved. Not sure whats going on there?
Thanks for all the help.
David.

For info. - no relationships given on 1841 census this appear to be Margaret & John LEWIS with their parents and siblings living in Aberdare in 1841
